Dead Man's Chest has won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the 79th Annual Academy Awards.

John Knoll: You know the naysayers said that four blind kids from the Bronx couldn't make it in visual effects, but here we are. First, I got to thank Jerry Bruckheimer for entrusting us with this great, big project. Thanks to Gore Verbinski, your vast imagination, your humor, your tireless work ethic, and that's why we're up here. Thank you. Bill Nighy, thanks for being such a wonderful partner in creating this character. Sorry about the deeply embarrassing computer pajamas, but we think it was worth it. And thanks to the crew.

Dead Man's Chest has been nominated for BAFTA awards for Best Production Design, Costume Design, Sound, Visual Effects and Hair & Make-up. The event will take place on Sunday February 11 at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London and will be broadcast on BBC ONE.

Oscars Makeup shortlist announced

Dead Man's Chest heads up the shortlist for this year's Best Makeup Oscar. The Oscar committee will view 10 minutes of excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films on Jan. 20, before naming three nominations when the hopefuls are announced on Jan. 23.

`Pirates' tops f/x nominations

Dead Man's Chest received six nominations as the Visual Effects Society announced its nominees for the fifth annual VES Awards.

"Pirates" took noms for visual effects in an f/x-driven motion picture and single visual effect of the year (the only pic to grab noms in both of those categories), as well as animated character in a live-action motion picture, created environment in a live-action motion picture, miniatures and models in a motion picture and compositing. Winners of the VES Awards will be announced Feb. 11 at the Kodak Grand Ballroom.

Dead Man's Chest, Johnny and Keira led winners during Tuesday night's 33rd annual People's Choice Awards. Johnny won Favourite Male Star and Action Star award. Johnny and Keira were voted Favourite On Screen Matchup and DMC won Favourite Movie and Movie Drama award

'Pirates' DVD sells 5 million

Variety reports that Dead Man's Chest is on track to become the highest-selling live-action disc of all time.

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" -- expected to be the biggest seller in an already busy holiday season -- tallied nearly 5 million sales in its Tuesday bow, tying the March debut of Warners' "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." "Dead Man's Chest," which has earned more than $1 billion in worldwide B.O. this year, is poised to outplunder the original "Pirates" on disc. The first "Pirates" sold 11 million units during its first week on shelves in December 2003 -- a record for a live-action film -- and has sold 18 million copies overall, with 16 million of those on DVD.
