In Celebration casting news
posted by Jas, 05/25/07
Orlando's theatre debut in In Celebration will open on July 12 2007 at the Duke of York's Theatre, previews starts from July 5.

Additional casting has been announced for the upcoming London revival of David Storey's 1969 drama In Celebration. Joining the previously announced Orlando Bloom (as Steven) will be Lynda Baron (Mrs. Burnett), Gareth Farr (Colin), Paul Hilton (Andrew) and Ciaran McIntyre (Reardon). Anna Mackmin will direct the production, which begins previews July 5 at the Duke of York's Theatre with an official opening July 12. Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, the play is currently booking until Sept. 15.

In Celebration will feature designs by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Mark Henderson, music by Stephen Warbeck and sound by John Leonard. The play, according to press notes, is described in this manner: "Three brothers — Andrew, Colin and Steven — return home to the northern roots of their childhood for a family reunion. Although they have returned to celebrate, the explosive complexities of family life and long-held grievances are unlikely to improve the chances of a decent party."

Show times are Monday-Saturday at 7:30 PM with matinees Tuesdays and Saturdays at 2:30 PM. For more information call 0870 060 6623.

Orlando Bloom is a dancing maniac. I've seen him around town cutting a rug at spots like Hyde, Teddy's and Winston's. For real, the dude can dance. And what about his character, Will? Orlando says he's perfectly content with the franchise being done with...for now. Orlando interview in Film Review
    posted by Jas, 05/16/07
May issue of Film Review has an interview with Orlando and a preview of summer movies

Orlando Bloom is understandably grinning from ear to ear as he tells Film Review that his life has been made up of happy surprises. Relaxing in the luxury of a suite at London's Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the Pirates of the Caribbean star insists that one of the biggest shocks has been how he has developed into a swashbuckling hero of the big screen.

"I never thought I would be doing as much action as I have been," explains the actor, who's now clearly relaxed with his A-list status, as he reflects over a career that has seen him star in two of the biggest adventure franchises in Hollywood history. First there was his appearance as the bow and arrow toting Legolas in behemoth that was The Lord of The Rings trilogy and now he's about to see the Jolly Roger fluttering defiantly once more as he sets sail with Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley in the third installment of the Pirates of The Caribbean phenomenon.

Breathless stuff indeed and it's so enticing that Film Review, fingers crossed, wonders whether we might dare hope that things are being neatly set up for a fourth film in the Pirates series. But Bloom, who has seemingly added diplomacy to his talents in the five years or so that he has been a member of the Pirates crew, is giving very little away.

"I don't know whether they will go on to Part Four," he says. "This is the end of another trilogy. But I would never say never, because it has been so much fun!" A large chunk of the anticipated fun in At World's End is, of course, the appearance of Rolling Stone Keith Richards as Captain Jack's dad, Teague Sparrow. It is one of those screen events that you feel is destined to earn a page in Hollywood history, but Bloom confesses that the filming of Keith's cameo is something he missed out on. What's more astonishing is that he made the deliberate decision not to watch the rock legend swash his buckle for the cameras! "I actually made a point of not going to the set [when Keith Richards was there] and I am kicking myself for it now," explains Bloom. "I thought he was going to be so hounded, even though he is a rock god. So I thought 'Let him get on with it' and I did not bother him."

    Orlando on the ropes
    posted by Jas, 05/13/07
Scotland on Sunday has an interview with Orlando

Bloom has put acting to one side for a while. He has not been seen on screen since the last Pirates film. He has, instead, decided to do some catching up on life. "It is the first time in eight years that I haven't got an acting job which I am immediately going in to," he says. "I celebrated my 30th birthday in January and it feels different," he says. "It is less urgent. It is now time for reflection and to ask myself: 'How much living do you want to do?' As much as working has been my life, there is now a shift in my priorities."

He seems aware, then, that he has reached something of a crossroads. "Is there a play that I can get off the ground?" he asks. "I don't want to be thrust out into London's West End and feel like my balls are left hanging. At the same time, it would be great to do a play in the West End and be part of a company. I did see Equus recently and thought Daniel Radcliffe [the Harry Potter star] did a great job. It was really a brave choice. It made me think."

His thinking is obviously taking him on a leap in the opposite direction to what has worked so far. "The movies I've enjoyed in the last couple of years have been things like The Constant Gardener, Hotel Rwanda and The Last King Of Scotland - human stories which shed light on the world," he says. "I have thought that if Leonardo DiCaprio can go from Titanic to The Beach and finally to films like Blood Diamond, then why can't I?"

As the question hangs uncertainly, he eventually adds: "I have been unbelievably lucky. One of our national sports is rugby and it feels as if I am being tackled and brought down. It is like: 'Don't think you are going that far ahead of anyone else, because we are all part of the same pack.' I really love that about this country." There is no hint of irony in his voice. He is equally pragmatic about the paparazzi. "When I was filming the latest Pirates in Hawaii, someone took a picture of me peeing against a rock," he says. "They had a great one of me surfing too. But that's not the one they wanted or used, is it?"

It seems a good moment to ask him about the latest set of pictures, of him with Victoria Secrets model Miranda Kerr, walking along a street in New York. Was she, as reported, his latest girlfriend? "It is odd, isn't it?" he says, non-committal. "She is beautiful, too. But I am not with anyone. I always used to say that work is my mistress - and that's not true any more. I am still working out what I want."

As for the gossip, since he's broken up with long-term actress girlfriend Kate Bosworth, he is as relaxed about that as he is about his critical mauling. "I was seen at dinner the other night with the director Bryan Singer," he says. "I had bumped into him because I had visited Kate on a film set. He directed Superman Returns. By the time I got back, even my mum was saying: 'Are you going to do a part in the next Superman?' That is how gossip gets mangled."

He seems impervious, then, about his current fast-falling state in the eyes of critics. One producer, when looking ahead to Bloom's next role on an empty CV, even suggested he should "take whatever you can get". But despite the jokes, the reviews and his dodgy reputation as an actor, Bloom remains defiant. "I love getting dressed up, putting on make-up and prancing around with a sword in my hand," he says. "I feel as if I am lucky to have created a body of work of which I am proud."

    posted by Jas, 05/11/07
The Indendent has more story to tell from their visit to the Singapore set in At World's End, there are comments from the filmmakers and the cast.

Bloom, ducking out to the car park during lunch, suggests that it is about time that he put aside childish things and did some acting. "I've kind of used up this whole trilogy thing. It would be nice to do a film without a sword for once," he says, before concluding, if only to keep his agent happy: "If it were to take another form down the line... who knows?" Full story

Bloom and Johansson in Talks for Pompeii
    posted by Jas, 05/10/07
Coming Soon reports that director Roman Polanski is in talks with Orlando and Scarlett Johansson (The Prestige) to star in his historical tentpole Pompeii.

Oscar winner Roman Polanski (The Pianist) is in talks with Orlando Bloom ("Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogies) and Scarlett Johansson (The Prestige) to star in his historical tentpole Pompeii.

Based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Robert Harris (author of "Archangel" and "Fatherland"), Pompeii tells the story of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79 through the eyes of a young engineer, Marcus Attilius Primus, who is sent to repair the greatest aqueduct in the Roman Empire, which brings water to 250,000 people on the Bay of Naples. Attilius not only has to fight the corrupt forces that control the town of Pompeii, but ultimately the overwhelming power of nature itself.

The film has a projected August start with plans for a five month shoot. Polanski co-wrote the script with Harris.

Update: We have delved more into this story and, while Bloom and Johansson were indeed in consideration for the film, they can't do the film because production has been postponed until April 2008, which conflicts with the actors' schedules. The movie is still being sold at the Cannes Film Festival with a promise of A-list actors attached. It should hit theaters 3rd or 4th Quarter 2009.

Bloom to make West End debut
    posted by Jas, 05/08/07
Something to look forward to after Pirates 3, Variety reports that Orlando is set to make his West End debut in a play called "In Celebration"

Orlando Bloom will make his West End debut in veteran Brit playwright David Storey's 1969 drama "In Celebration." The play, a Chekhovian-style ensemble drama about three brothers returning home for their parents' 40th wedding anniversary, will be directed by Anna Mackmin and produced by Sonia Friedman. Dates and theater are still subject to confirmation but the most likely venue is the 380-seat Trafalgar Studios for a July opening. No further casting has yet been confirmed.

Bloom has been eyeing legit projects for some time. He is keen to be part of an stage ensemble having worked exclusively on screen since being cast in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy almost immediately on leaving London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1999.

AICN visits the editing room of At World's End

There's a reason this one is skirting the three hour mark... they're going to resolve everything they've put into motion, and just like with DEAD MAN'S CHEST and the first film, there's even a little bit of extra movie at the very, very end after all the credits. Among the many storylines to be resolved, we see Elizabeth deal with both her betrayal of Jack and her relationship with Will. We see Will resolve his attempts to rescue his father Bootstrap Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) from the service of Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), who is now under the thrall of Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander) and Admiral Norrington (Jack Davenport), who are commanding a tremendous naval force that is imposing a new order on the entire world. Even supporting characters like Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) and Pintel (Lee Arenberg) and Gibbs (Kevin McNally) and Marty (Martin Klebba) get some degree of resolution. Full story

    Disney moves up 'Pirates' opening
    posted by Jas, 05/07/07
Disney has moved forward the opening of At World's End by a few hours to the evening of May 24.

Disney confirmed the move Monday, a day after Sony's "Spider-Man 3" demolished the domestic opening weekend record in $151 million in North America -- $15 million more than last July's $135.6 million launch for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." As is often the case with tentpoles, the new Spidey record included early showings -- in this case, screenings of at midnight and 3 a.m. on opening day, last Friday. Disney said it began asking exhibitors last week to schedule the first screenings of "At World's End" for 8 p.m. on May 24 -- a Thursday that ushers in Memorial Day weekend. With anticipation sky-high for the third "Pirates," Disney could conceivably regain bragging rights for the top opening frame.

'Pirates' aims for the real thing
    posted by Jas, 05/04/07
LA Times has an article about At World's End set and has Orlando talking about shooting the movie.

Orlando Bloom, with two fantasy epics under his sword belt now (his first being "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy), found life on the lavish set exhilarating and exhausting. "It gives you a frame of reference," he says. "Puts you in a situation, which is especially important in an action adventure where you might be waiting around for a shot to be set up and then you have to suddenly be very intense and in the moment. Atmosphere is very important. The blue screen is much more … challenging." But physically detailed sets have their drawbacks too; weeks in cavernous gloom or on rain-lashed decks can leave one grateful for things like sunshine and automobiles. "It's incredibly hard work," Bloom says. "In Palmdale, it was raining all the time. We all got sick once or twice. It was brutal. I've spent five years of my life on this, most of my adult life, and it's quite nice to return to the modern world."

    Geoffrey Rush Interview
    posted by Jas, 05/04/07
Geoffrey Rush talks about At World's End at a press junket in Melbourne

"Pirates 2" and "3" were always conceived with one huge story arc, with that cliffhanger interval - the presumed death of Jack Sparrow followed by Barbossa's resurrection. To be honest, because it is one huge story, a lot of what happened in "Pirates 2" was putting down the pipe-work for the kinds of dramatic payoffs that are going to happen in the third film. As I was going through the screenplay, I thought "My God, every seven pages there's some phenomenal new action sequence that comes out of the storyline or flips the story into another dimension". The big set pieces the fans are looking forward to, as well as the convolutions and permutations of the character conflicts, are there in force.

We had a hefty schedule on our hands because they're big films, and just the logistics of shooting out at sea means you look at the daily call sheet and [realise] you're 30 miles out at sea, I've got to get up in the dark and go out in a dinghy on very rough seas to get to the location - and then spend two hours in make-up. Of course we've been doing this on-and-off now for four-and-a-half years so there's a tremendous camaraderie between all of the departments. The actors don't just spend time amongst themselves; you spend a good part of the day with the make-up team, the stunt guys, the expert marine department who are ferrying you there. Someone like Johnny is a great team leader... it's great not to have a diva. It's great to have someone who's very laid-back, very playful... he's probably the only person who dares to ad-lib. A lot of what he throws in makes it into the final mix. Jack Sparrow is some crazy part of Johnny's brain. Full interview

Pirates 3: World's End - Are We Excited?
    posted by Jas, 05/02/07
A preview of At World's End from MSN UK

It's bigger and ballsierr - At Worlds End not only features the return of Rush, it also boasts a whole new angle to the story – Asian pirates! Chow Yun-Fat joins the cast as Captain Sao Feng, and with everyone sailing off the edge of the world into danger, expect even more of a ride than the second film. And it has to wrap the story up with a bang, so with our expectations sky-high (and the luxury of reactions to the latest film helping them improve the third), the filmmakers will be raising the bar.

Bloom and Knightley - We know we should be proud of British acting types making it big in Hollywood blockbusters, but if you thought that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were slightly bland and annoying in the first film, they were ten times less interesting in the second. We say push the focus of Worlds End on to Mackenzie Crook's Ragetti and Lee Arenberg's Pintel.

Look at Star Wars - Stay with us on this one, folks: people were describing the second movie as the franchise's equivalent of The Empire Strikes Back. So that would make At Worlds End The Return Of The Jedi. Pardon us if that prospect makes us quake in fear rather than tremble with excitement. At least Ewoks can't swim. Probably.

    Excitement Rating: 6/10. Full preview.

A visit to the set of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'
    posted by Jas, 05/01/07
MSN Movies will have an inside look of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" later this week.

The surprise sight of Rush, however, did not diminish the impressive detail and scope of the Singapore set. Built over a massive water tank, the multilevel endeavor's centerpiece was an ancient marketplace where most of the action occurred. Small wooden bridges connected stilted buildings to the marketplace as small boats floated freely in between. No expense was spared to make the locale as authentic as possible. However, after catching up with Heinrichs recently, it appears that recreating 18th-century Singapore was just another difficult task during his 28-month journey to produce both films.

"We did have [references to] later 19th [century] contemporary Chinese cities, and a lot of our visual cues came off that," Heinrichs says. "But we completely made up the part where all these stilt houses are kind of connected to each dwelling. That is more Malaysian of the last 100 years, but it's certainly not a stretch of imagination to think they might have actually done that at that time at well."

Still, there was some nervousness when it was discovered that Chow Yun-Fat's wife was actually from Singapore. "There was a big concern that they were somehow going to be offended by how we were representing her birthplace," Heinrichs recalls. "Apparently they loved the set and I think they were pretty hip to the idea of movies anyway and they had a great time."
