AWE trailer during superbowl
posted by Jas, 01/28/07
According to Terry Rossio, there is no way to tell if there will be At World's End trailer during the Superbowl. Update: Disney has no plans to promote Pirates 3 in this year's telecast of the Superbowl.

From Wordplayer: As for the Super Bowl, there might be no trailer at all, or they might use the ad space for a 'teaser' (not a completed full trailer) or heck maybe they're fooling us all and an actual trailer will be done by then. No way to tell right now.

Orlando is mentioned in an interview with Billie Beach, an extra in At World's End.

Not the least bit star struck and unimpressed by celebrity, he's discovered that people are people no matter where he goes. "Johnny Depp is hard to get close to with all his people around him. Orlando Bloom is a real nice guy. I had lunch with him the other day," Beach said.

Hollywood and pop to help raise value of carbon trading
posted by Jas, 01/28/07
Orlando an other celebrities will kick-start the market for carbon trading in a plan to step up the fight against global warming.

Hollywood actors such as Orlando Bloom and bands such as Coldplay and Scissor Sisters are helping to front an audacious plan to step up the fight against global warming by kick-starting the market for carbon trading. The scheme aims to buy and retire "carbon credits" to push up the price of CO2. Reducing supply by refusing to re-sell carbon credits should increase the price and financially penalise companies which fail to meet their targets. It will be launched simultaneously in London and Los Angeles tomorrow by the Global Cool Foundation. The charity also wants to use the money raised to invest in alternative energy companies and raise awareness about climate change through a series of concerts specifically aimed at the youth audience. Back on dry land after 'Pirates' wraps
posted by Jas, 01/25/07
According to Bill Nighy, Pirates 3 wrapped reshoots in Hawaii last week.

Since it started shooting in the first quarter of 2005, concurrently with last year's "Dead Man's Chest," that has to give the threequel some kind of record for drawn-out productions. Nighy actually completed his role in the vastly anticipated epic last fall. He relates, "When I left, I must say I felt strange walking away. They had a huge cake for me the size of a coffee table, with a beautiful portrait of my character, so it was a massive squid cake. Had I not been such a manly kind of guy, I would have cried. It was very, very manly," the actor stresses wryly. "Johnny Depp is a world-class gentleman."

Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski commented on the release of At World's End in May.

The makers of the third Pirates are divided as to whether the May release might be dangerous. "You guys have been complaining about box office being in the doldrums," producer Jerry Bruckheimer says of the media. "But let's see what happens. Good movies hang around." But director Gore Verbinski, whose first two Pirates did phenomenally well debuting in July, is apprehensive. "It's crazy," he says. "Everybody's going to get hurt. I don't see the logic." One thing is certain: Unless one of the films is slaughtered, expect fourth installments in the very near future.

At World's End preview
posted by Jas, 01/19/07
A preview of At World's End from USA Today. Spoilers ahead

Opens: May 25.
Stars: Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom, Chow Yun-Fat
Plot: It's the yo-ho-ho gang against that old squid puss, Davy Jones, and the weaselly Lord Beckett.
What's new? In this third chapter, a Hong Kong man of action fattens the pirate ranks. And a Stone rolls by. "Chow Yun-Fat's character, Captain Sao Feng, is very interesting," says producer Jerry Bruckheimer of the addition of a Singaporean buccaneer. "No one is sure what his allegiances are, to save the pirates or team up with Beckett, who now has Davy Jones' heart and controls him. He butts heads with everyone." As for the long-awaited cameo of Keith Richards as Captain Teague, Jack Sparrow's papa and source of his gypsy-on-acid fashion sense? "He's fantastic. Very sexy."

Disney President and CEO Bob Iger delivers keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, a member of MiceChat forum was at the event and he posted a review of a clip from At World's End shown at the show. Spoilers ahead, stop reading if you don't want to know.

  • Yes, some of it takes place in Singapore.
  • Yes, Elizabeth still wants Will (this from Jerry Bruckheimer himself).
  • Jack appears to be more like the conniving rogue we loved in Curse of the Black Pearl, less prone to the cartoonish antics we saw in Dead Man's Chest.
  • Jack and crew will try to save a ship from capsizing by running from one side of the deck to the other (ok, that's a cartoonish antic, but it looked kinda fun).
  • In the climactic battle scene, Jack and Davy Jones will swordfight from atop a yardarm. The early CGI (even the brief glimpse I caught) is impressive)
  • A pirate's life for Chow Yun-Fat

One of the greatest actors of all time, IMO, Chow Yun Fat talks about his character in At World's End

He's played the most romantic of martial artists ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"), the coolest of crime-world characters (John Woo's "The Killer," "Hard Boiled" and "A Better Tomorrow") and even the King of Siam.

But Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-Fat is really, really, really excited about being a pirate. In May's third installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, "At World's End," Chow is duplicitous Capt. Sao Feng, the leader of a band of Chinese buccaneers whose dicey cooperation is instrumental in rescuing Capt. Jack Sparrow from watery damnation.

"It's a major change in my film-business career," the 51-year-old Chow enthuses, grinning like an eager kid. "Myself, I'm a fan of parts one and two, so it's like a dream come true to work with Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush. And it's a very interesting character. Without this guy, Johnny Depp will be locked up in Davy Jones' Locker. (My character is) the key guy! He's got the only real directions that will save Jack Sparrow."

Clash of the sequel titans / New AWE still
    posted by Jas, 01/15/07
LA Times has a report on the head-to-head clash of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Shrek the Third" and "Spider-Man 3" and a sneak preview of each movies. The article comes with a new still from AWE.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Director Verbinski has lost track. "I don't know how long it's been," he says of when he started working on the back-to-back "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels. After a few minutes' reflection, Verbinski concludes it's been 2 1/2 years. And on this winter day, he's only just started editing the third film. If the director's memory is a bit blurry, it's not surprising. With each new "Pirates" movie, the filmmaker's ambitions evolve. At first, Verbinski says, he was simply trying to blend swashbuckling with Monty Python. "We thought they'd never let us make a pirate movie," he says.

But that first movie was a 2003 blockbuster, and Disney seemed to like what Verbinski and writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio were up to. "The second time we thought, 'We're not making them nervous.' And that was scary," Verbinski says. "You're trying to mess with the system, and the system says, 'Right on, brother!' " So Verbinski promises that the next — but probably not last — installment in his franchise will revert to more storytelling mischief. "We thought maybe we have to scare ourselves in terms of the absurdity and level of funk. We want to destroy the genre that we resurrected. We defined it. And now we want to kill it."

When we saw Jack Sparrow (Depp) last summer in "Dead Man's Chest," he was paying the price for selling his soul to the devil (in the form of Davy Jones), and the fey buccaneer was left stuck inside a giant sea monster when the credits rolled. For the third film, the challenge is to get Sparrow out. The cast of characters continues to expand. For the third movie, Chow Yun Fat joins as Sao Feng, the pirate lord of Singapore, who is battling the ruthless East Indian Trading Co., headed by Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander). Where computer-generated sea and pirate creatures shared screen time in last summer's film, water itself will have a costarring role in the new sequel.

And if double-crossing was part of every other characters' personality in the second film, it's only natural that triple-crossing would be a mainstay in the third. "It's ridiculous how many people are screwing people over," Verbinski says. "But the subplot is that pirates are actually more trustworthy in a weird way, even though they are vile." While it's hardly a secret, the added attraction of the third installment is an appearance by aging Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards, who was part of Depp's acting inspiration, as Sparrow's father. "I think it's singular," Verbinski says. "It's everything I hoped for."

At a Walt Disney Corporation press conference, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Keith Richards is going to be in Pirates 3. A completed action scenes from At World's End was also shown at the event.

Legendary Rolling Stones guitarist, Keith Richards, credited with inspiring Johnny Depp's buccaneer in Pirates of the Caribbean, will be in the franchise's next film. Richards will appear in Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World's End, acclaimed producer Jerry Bruckheimer said during a Walt Disney Corporation press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Depp, the actor who plays the roguish Captain Jack Sparrow in the films, has gone on record describing how the rascally but likeable character was crafted in the image of Richards. Bruckheimer said he was leaving for Hawaii tomorrow to finish filming the latest Pirates movie, and he provided the audience with a glimpse at completed action scenes.

"Keith Richards is going to be in the third Pirates," Bruckheimer said. "You'll have to see the movie to see if he is playing the guitar."

James McAvoy feels sorry for Keira and Orlando
    posted by Jas, 01/07/07
Actor James McAvoy pities Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom for becoming major Hollywood stars at such a young age.

The 27-year-old's performance in this year's The Last King Of Scotland has been touted as Oscar worthy, but he's glad he didn't land such an important role earlier as he wouldn't have been able to cope with the attention. He admits, "If I was suddenly crowned a major movie star at 21, which is what happened to Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, I don't think I could cope. I feel sorry for those guys because they've had no time to build any experience or skills. You suddenly have to be good. You also have no training in how to deal with what you have become."

#2 "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"
The roller coaster first two "Pirates" movies reached such great heights it's a wonder no one got seasick. In "At World's End," the future of piracy is at stake — not to mention the future of Captain Jack (Johnny Depp), perhaps the most original character in recent memory. Last seen in the mouth of a giant Krakken, Jack is rescued from Davy Jones' locker by Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) — a bigger wreck than maybe even his Pearl. Once freed, Jack Sparrow will face Davy Jones and "Bootstrap" Bill Turner, Lord Beckett and Admiral Norrington, Singapore pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat), and, surprise, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Yo, ho, ho and a bottle of Tums — "Pirates 3" opens on Memorial Day.

Synopsis of At World's End from Empire Movies

In the follow-up to the record-breaking smash 2006 hit "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," we find our heroes Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) allied with Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) in a desperate quest to free Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from his mind-bending trap in Davy Jones' locker – while the terrifying ghost ship, The Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones, under the control of the East India Trading Company, wreaks havoc across the Seven Seas. Navigating through treachery, betrayal and wild waters, they must forge their way to exotic Singapore and confront the cunning Chinese Pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Now headed beyond the very ends of the earth, each must ultimately choose a side in a final, titanic battle – as not only their lives and fortunes, but the entire future of the freedom-loving Pirate way, hangs in the balance. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Gore Verbinski from a screenplay written by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio, our beloved cast sets sail once again on a fresh new adventure in May 2007.
