Orlando is Britain's most powerful film stars in Hollywood
posted by Jas, 08/13/07
According to the list compiled by the UK Film Council, Orlando is Britain's most powerful film stars in Hollywood

Challenge anyone to name the big players in British film and Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman are all likely to get a mention. But those two are surprise names on a list of the most powerful British film stars and movie-makers in Hollywood today. Winslet, Thompson and Rickman, on the other hand, don't even make the grade.

The list, compiled by the UK Film Council, reveals the country's most successful actors in terms of box office earnings over the course of the past five years. It also lists the most successful directors of the same period. To qualify for the list, actors must have had significant roles in films with a box office haul of at least £500 million, while directors need to have taken at least a tenth of that with their own projects.

Orlando Bloom, 30, who starred in seven blockbusters, including the Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings franchises, tops the list with a combined box office gross of more than £2.6 billion.

Louise Tutt, the deputy editor of Screen International, said the rankings had more to do with the success of individual films than the bankability of their stars. "It's about the popularity of Lord of The Rings, not about Orlando and Ian who were in them," she said. The recent success of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which was released this year and so not included, will keep both Bloom and Knightley on the list for some while.

But many in the industry predict that others could quickly fall by the wayside and doubt the capacity of older stars to keep picking up lead roles in blockbusters. Mark Denning, the editor of Empire magazine, said: "It is unlikely that Orlando will carry on at that level of box office success because there aren't many blockbusters around. But he will certainly hover around the top for a while."

TOP 10 MONEY-MAKERS:
Orlando Bloom - Lord of the Rings trilogy, three Pirates of the Caribbean films, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven: £2.64 billion. Full list and report

I need your help, again

My server has been asking me to move a couple of times in the past and they have been very kind in letting me stay all these times even though I have been using alot of resources but unfortunately the time is needed for me to upgrade so I really need your help.

OBM is currently running on two servers, as you know the main site is hosted by the ever generous WOTR, it's where all the main files are and there's no problem with the server. The media page is hosted on another server where most of the video files are and it's this server that has been giving me a problem due to recent download of POTC 3 files. I think I can handle the monthly charges but the one time set up fee is a bit much, thus this desperate message again.

Since OBM has been online I have been asked to get myself a dedicated server many times but I dare not think about it because the thought of running my own server when I don't know much about the technical side of it scares the hell out of me. What makes me decide to take the plunge now is because my server is now offering a fully managed dedicated server which means I won't have to worry when there's technical problem, they will take care of it.

So, If you think you can help click here to donate, it doesn't have to be big, even a dollar will help alot! Any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Bloom brings the fans, co-stars bring the power

Another review of Orlando's performance in In Celebration.

If there's a scene-stealing role, it's the one played by Paul Hilton as the successful lawyer-turned-failed artist middle brother and not the one by Bloom. However, in financial and media-frenzy terms, Bloom is carrying the show. He literally stopped traffic on the busy St. Martin's Lane on Friday night as he left the Duke of York's stage door to the ear-puncturing screams of fans. Onstage, surrounded by six excellent actors, he's a bit player who acquits himself well, but leaves the heavy lifting to Hilton and the rest. Still, without Bloom, this moving piece of drama from the author of This Sporting Life would have never made it to the West End where it's currently wowing celebrity gawkers and tough London critics alike. It's a distinctly English piece of theatre that, perhaps inevitably, means class-obsessed. Bloom, still boyish-looking despite a mustache and an oversized brown cardigan, is sweetly, romantically withdrawn and has the predominantly young and female audience audibly swooning throughout.
