Daily Record has an interview with Orlando.

One amazing set-piece sees Will and Sparrow having a three-way sword fight on a massive water wheel that has snapped off its frame and is rolling down a hill. Orlando said: "That was an absolute nightmare to shoot. I was harnessed in that thing and because gravity pushes you one way as it's rolling the other way, you're like, Whoa!' Then as the wheel goes back up you're fighting gravity to keep in the same direction. It was very uncomfortable." And while they made the film in the Caribbean, Orlando is quick to claim it wasn't a picnic and the film-makers got their money's worth.

"Soaking wet, six in the morning with a flaming sword in your hand," he pointed out. "That's worth every penny. "They're getting their money's worth, believe me. It's hard work being wet and cold, it doesn't matter if you're in the Caribbean. Those rain machines pump out cold water. Big drops. And if it was at night time it was really freezing. All the wet suits in the world can't stop that feeling."

While Orlando enjoyed seeing Johnny Depp getting completely soaked when a giant squid squirts all over him, he revealed that the character-based scenes with Will's dad Bootstrap Bill, played by Stellan Skarsgaard, are what makes the follow-up to The Curse of the Black Pearl something special. Orlando said: "A lot of the stuff that I got to do with Will in the movie was great because it's a father/son dynamic. "Will's real inner battle is choosing between the girl or his father. "As a young man, you have to have a relationship with your father, and Will knows that and he knows that is what he is fighting for."

So how do he and Johnny get on? Orlando laughed: "We kiss and cuddle. Every now and again he'll say, 'Orly, can I have a quick kiss? I miss you.' I'm like, 'Johnny, really?' "But thankfully there are no tongues. I'm joking, of course." -- Full interview

    POTC 2 LA premire report
    posted by Jas, 06/29/06
The Irish Times has a report on the POTC 2 LA premiere

The doors open again and a good-looking man comes in. Hooray! Sadly, it is Orlando Bloom rather than Johnny Depp. "What was it like working with Johnny Depp?" somebody asks. "Weird. He's a strange man. Peculiar," Bloom laughs. "No. He is a fantastic guy and great actor. He is really brave with his choices. There were a lot of questions about the role he was turning in and he stuck to his guns and I really admire that."

Bloom has a divisive effect on audiences. Few other actors have such an enthusiastic fan-base of teenage girls. Most everybody else, however, finds him somewhat bland. Somebody in the press pack dares to suggest that his last two films - Ridley Scott's overblown Kingdom of Heaven and Cameron Crowe's truly frightful Elizabethtown - might have been something of a disappointment. The questioner is not a teenage girl. "I loved both those films," Bloom says, without visibly bristling. "Look. To work with those two great directors in the space of a year was just amazing. I wouldn't change anything." Orlando comes across as a lovely fellow. So much so that everybody forgives him for not being Johnny Depp. -- Full report

    Swarmed by teenagers and grandmothers
    posted by Jas, 06/29/06
The Age has an interview with Orlando

Orlando Bloom doesn't mind a beer, loves hanging out at his local in London and has plenty of mates. The problem he has is sitting incognito at the pub for a few hours. Teenage girls camp outside his hotels when they track his location down while grandmothers send him love letters. So, with all demographics covered, when his mates say they're off to the pub for a drink, Bloom gets a little nervous.

"Ahhhhh ... no," Bloom answers when asked during an interview in Los Angeles recently if he can still go down to the pub in London for a quiet beer. There are times, however, his thirst leads him to take a chance. "I can do it sometimes," Bloom, with a little extra thought, adds. Apparently there are a few tricks and lines a star must have ready. "To be honest, most people when you do that, aren't expecting to see you in the pub," Bloom said. "So, if somebody came up to me and said 'Are you Orlando Bloom?' I say 'No, I get that all the time. People always ask me that'."

Dead Man's Chest opens in Australia on July 6 while Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is set for release next year. "It was beautiful," he said of the filming locations, which included The Bahamas, Dominica, St Vincent and the Grenadines. "Sometimes it was deathly boring. Other times it was fantastically fun. There were a lot of dice games," Bloom said. "A lot of card games and reading. But, nothing beats being home in London", Bloom said.

When Bloom sat down for this interview in Los Angeles, he had just flown in after a few months relaxing in London. "I've just came back from England," Bloom says with a smile. "I was there for a while and it was beautiful. "To see London go from autumn, spring to summer is just beautiful." Bloom has also been catching up with Bosworth, who plays Lois Lane in Superman Returns. Superman Returns opens this week, with Dead Man's Chest following a week later, but Bloom says there is no competition between the two, who have been in an on-again, off-again relationship for three years.

"No, we're both really happy to be a part of two films we're both really proud of," he said, denying the couple had any bets going on which film would top the box office. The pair will soon spend plenty of time together when they star in Seasons of Dust, a film he describes as "Days of Heaven, meets Badlands, meets Bonnie and Clyde". Bloom is not concerned about following in the footsteps of former lovebirds, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, who shot two disastrous films together, Gigli and Jersey Girl, although Bloom admitted he "never thought he'd do" a film with Bosworth. The collaboration is also a surprise because Bloom and Bosworth rarely speak about their relationship in public.

"I feel really good about it," Bloom said. "I love the script. "It's a very comfortable environment." Bloom, with the fame, career and beautiful girlfriend, not surprisingly is looking forward to the future. His only problem appears to be dodging the fans and spending a few hours of drinking time with his mates at the pub. "I thank my lucky stars all the time," he said.

    Bruckheimer Dishes Pirates DVD Deets
    posted by Jas, 06/29/06
IGN reports that producer Jerry Bruckheimer promises tons of bonus materials on the forthcoming POTC 2 DVD

"There's a lot of phenomenal stuff that we filmed that is not in the movie. That dice game - there's some additional footage on that dice game that's fantastic that will be in the DVD. There's a lot of stuff like that." When asked how much of this material will require an expanded slate of special effects, Bruckheimer responded, "they're already completed. Gore [Verbinski, the director, is] getting time to go into the editing room and kind of go through all that material and start putting it together. [There is] some wonderful stuff on Cannibal Island with Johnny. Some very funny things that you just couldn't put everything in."

Bruckheimer also said that the disc would feature a bounty of behind-the-scenes footage. "Tons of it," the producer indicated. "We had a guy there most of the time. I think we gave the assistant cameramen some video cameras or digital cameras that they were filming stuff, so there's a lot of material available." He also revealed that they commissioned an actual documentary filmmaker to chronicle the production. "There was a documentarian that was following Gore around during the pre-production and the script phase of it, which has got some wonderful stuff. And decisions that were made on building the ships - not building the ships, [but] where to build things, what to do, the twists and turns in the script." -- full report

    Pirates 3 Production Details
    posted by Jas, 06/28/06
IGN has the production details for POTC 3

Director Gore Verbinski has only recently completed his work on the first Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, subtitled Dead Man's Chest, in time for the July 7th release. With the forthcoming promotional tour for the domestic and international releases this summer, Verbinski and his Pirates cast and crew won't see much of a break, heading back to finish production on part 3 this August.

"We are actually not going back [to the Bahamas]," says Verbinski. "We have shooting that is going to be off the coast of California. A little bit of water, but a lot of stage work left." Verbinski says they have "about 70 days" of work left on the film, which was partially completed during work on Dead Man's Chest." Portions of the third film were completed during production on Dead Man's Chest, particularly the sequences that took advantage of the same sets. The initial plan was to finish both films at once, but production problems have forced the cast and crew to return to finish the film.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer comments: "Storms, hurricanes, sick actors. Little things that - some mechanical problems that we had stretched it out, so we had to cut our shooting short a little bit, which in a way was good because it gave us more time to prepare and edit the second movie."

Coming Soon has an interview with Naomie Harris where she talked a little bit about POTC 3

While we don't know that much about her character in "Dead Man's Chest," Harris says not to worry because it will all become clear in the third "Pirates." "There is a huge back-story but it's all revealed in P3. You know she has her own reasons for doing what she's doing in P2. P2 is just an introduction for the character and in P3 then she's throughout, she actually goes on a journey with all the different characters... I had to do 2 without knowing what was happening in 3. But Gore did brief me, which was a little hard because there is so much that happens with her in P3."

It's official, Orlando will be in Season's of Dust
    posted by Jas, 06/28/06
I guess this makes it official, Orlando has made some comments about his involvement in Seasons of Dust in an interview with MTV.

British heartthrob Orlando Bloom has forged an impressive career by traveling the seven seas ("Pirates of the Caribbean"), assisting a fellowship's quest through Middle Earth ("The Lord of the Rings") and battling renegades in Somalia ("Black Hawk Down"). Now the 29-year-old hunk is making plans to embark on what could be his most hazardous mission yet: working with his girlfriend.

Bloom has signed on to "Seasons of Dust," the suddenly high-profile Tim Blake Nelson project that recently attracted Kate Bosworth too (see " 'Superman' Stars' Game Plan: Hit Up Vegas, Go Indie, Help Santa Manage Elves"). Bloom and the "Superman Returns" beauty have been involved in a tabloid-fueling on-again, off-again relationship for more than four years.

"[Nelson's] a fantastic actor and director," Bloom said of the "Syriana" character actor and director of the obscure Holocaust flick "The Grey Zone." "He's going to direct this film called 'Seasons of Dust,' which is a really cool movie, set in 1935 in the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma City. It's set during the Depression and drought. That was a real tough time in American history. It's a great piece of writing, and I'm excited to do it," Bloom added. "I play a guy who steals from bootleggers; he's kind of a rogue."

Bosworth has described the project as a hybrid of "The Grapes of Wrath," "Badlands" and "Bonnie and Clyde." With the latter two revolving around outlaw lovers on the run from authorities, their characters can be expected to be as seedy as they are steamy. Bosworth and Nelson previously collaborated on the homicide-and-porn drama "Wonderland," and the actress has expressed a desire to get equally gritty with "Dust."

"It's not a sword movie," laughed Bloom, acknowledging an excitement to sidestep his typecasting as a swords-and-sandals epic actor. "It's Oklahoma City. It's the South. It's really cool. It's kind of like a cowboy movie really," the actor added. "[Nelson] has awesome style, and he's a great director and fantastic writer."

"It's kind of like a cowboy movie really," the actor added. "[Nelson] has awesome style, and he's a great director and fantastic writer." Oscar-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, who directed Nelson in the Depression-South comedy "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," will serve as executive producers on the project. "Seasons of Dust" is expected to begin filming later this year, for a 2007 release.

    Bloomin' Pirates
    posted by Jas, 06/28/06
Coming Soon has posted their interview with Orlando where he talked about POTC 2, Kingdom of Heaven and Haven. Moviehole has a similar interview here

Welcome aboard. The Black Pearl that is. Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" are back and so is Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, the lovable pirate who gets caught up in Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) scheming, but beguiling high sea adventures. The charismatic and charming Bloom sat down with ComingSoon.net to talk about "Dead Man's Chest," as well as the third film that was being shot at the same time and whether Haven is ever going to be released.

ComingSoon.net: Was it easy to rediscover your inner pirate?
Orlando Bloom: Yeah. He goes from being a straight-laced kind of upright stick in the mud-Will-to becoming more of a bit of a pirate in this one, thankfully. It was kind of like discovering my inner pirate for the first time in away.

CS: What's the attraction of doing these films? Is it a fulfillment of your childhood fantasy?
Bloom: My whole career has been fulfilling my childhood fantasies. I play characters that are larger than life. Getting to play a knight, an elf, a prince, a soldier. I've really lived out all of my childhood fantasies. "Pirates" wasn't like living out another childhood fantasy. It was just a great opportunity to work with some great people [like] Johnny Depp. It was a big draw. I've always admired him as a young actor. When I signed up to do the first one it was to be on set with somebody like him, to see how he handles himself, to see how he goes about it, it was a real privilege. You learn as you go so I did that.

CS: Was it exhausting shooting the two films back-to-back?
Bloom: It's a real ensemble movie so it's not like I'm on the whole time, but yeah it was a challenge because, you know, you've got the arc of two movies to cover. You can shoot a scene from the second movie in the morning and the third movie in the afternoon and trying to remember where your character is emotionally or whatever at that point in the movie can be a bit more challenging. You just have to play the truth of the moment and thankfully we got great writers to create great stories and characters and develop it so it's not just one note.

CS: How do you compare "The Lord of the Rings," where you shot three films back-to-back, to these two films?
Bloom: It's not that different. "Lord of the Rings" was my first experience making movies. I had no ideas how movies were done. I thought that's the way they're done. In a way, I had nothing to compare it to. You have to think about where in that development you are. And sometimes, when you shoot one movie, you have to think about that anyway. But that's one movie. With two, a lot more time passes, and a lot more development happens, so you've got to keep jumping back and forward doing that kind of dance. The great thing about working on something like "Pirates," is that you don't really know what to expect. Going to see it, it's like a feast for the eyes. It's a shocker.

CS: What's the scariest or the most challenging scene you've shot?
Bloom: That's a good question. I think the wheel. Going upside down and stuff and sword fighting in there, I was all harnessed so I couldn't fall out, obviously. But it's just like, because of gravity, you're really reaching and at one point, the gravity takes you and you're still reaching, but it's pulling you the other way. That was really difficult. The birdcage was merely uncomfortable. Know what I mean? It was like running with that thing between your legs. You're watching for the crown jewels the whole time.

CS: You hurt yourself on a lot of other films.
Bloom: I didn't hurt myself this time. Woo hoo! No injuries, really. I'm a lot more conscious about not getting injured now than I was before. It's about time, yeah.

CS: Do you feel more danger from scenes that have to top this?
Bloom: Danger isn't the right word because it's a set. It's a controlled environment. It's fun. It's hard. Running backwards on top of a wheel was really difficult as it's rolling down a hill. But no danger. What's great about this film is that they did top [the first]. How do you top pirates going skeletal in the moonlight and coming out? That's a hard thing to do. But I think the mythology of Davy Jones and the ocean that tops it. Johnny Depp's entrance [in the first one], how do you top a ship that sinks down and then he steps onto the dock? How do you top that? It's really hilarious the way he enters this movie. You know what I mean? It's brilliant. It tops it in a different way. You can expect more as well [in the third].

CS: How did you develop the relationship with Keira this time?
Bloom: I know. Can you believe she's snogging Johnny Depp? What is going on?

    CS: Was it fun?
Bloom: Yeah. The first movie was one movie and we weren't sure it was going to become two movies. I remember being at Disneyland with Johnny, we're all sitting around with Jerry [Bruckheimer] and we're saying, let's do a pirate movie for the rest of our lives. That's when [it dawned on us] they were going to do more. It wasn't a done deal in my head [that they'd make sequels]. What's cool about it is that the talent, the writers, the vision of Jerry and Disney and everyone and Gore [Verbinski], particularly, they took what was a one-off movie, but because of what was already there on the page in terms of character-development, they were able to really take it somewhere, and that's a credit to the writers and that first movie. If it hadn't been great and the characters were too one-dimensional it would have been difficult to make more than one movie. But because of what was on the page, it was possible to make it into another movie, and then a third movie. Well, let's make a pirate movie for the rest of our lives.

CS: Do you feel you're in the home stretch?
Bloom: I don't know. I feel we're going to go back and attack it again. Yeah, we're in the home stretch. Definitely.

CS: Can we expect something more precarious in the next one?
Bloom: How can they top it? They seem to keep topping it. I'm trying to remember the third one. We're still shooting.

CS: Are you taking a break after "Pirates 3?"
Bloom: There's a couple of things I'm looking [at], but one of them I'm not sure if I'm going to be doing it in the next couple of months or at the end of "Pirates" (3). It just depends on scheduling.

CS: Johnny says he's up for more.
Bloom: Dude, I know, man. I can't blame him. I remember watching the first one and seeing what Johnny did and what Geoffrey [Rush] did and I was like these guys have "freedom" tattooed across their foreheads and they're doing it. And I'm playing this straight guy. But it wasn't until I saw it that I understood that you can't have one without the other. I am the foil to his [wacky character]. This one is different because its' a real ensemble and you've got Davy Jones and Keira's the beauty and the sword-kicking, ass-kicking beauty at that.

CS: Is it tougher to wear soaking wet pirate gear or "Kingdom of Heaven" knight armor?
Bloom: Wet pirate gear, believe it or not. Being soaking wet is miserable man. It doesn't matter if you're in the Caribbean or what you're in. The rain that comes out of those rain machines is cold. It's big drops and its cold in the Caribbean. If you're soaking wet for like nine hours, it's cold and miserable. That was hard work. Dry and hot in the desert in chain mail wasn't comfortable, but I'd take that over soaking wet freezing any day.

CS: Ridley came close to telling us to get the long version of "Kingdom of Heaven."
Bloom: Yeah. I say go out and buy the long version, mate. I'm so happy to have been a part of that process. I would go straight back into the desert in a ton of chain mail for Ridley any day of the week. He's an amazing director and I can't wait to see the long version.

CS: Do you think the theatrical release was compromised?
Bloom: I couldn't tell you. I'm the actor. That's not my area. Studios, agents, that's their area. I just show up with a sword in my hand and try and kill a few whoever it is. A squid. I'm really looking forward to that being released [on DVD] and I'm happy it's out there. When you look at a movie like "Blade Runner," when it was released, nobody got it. My hope is that one day, maybe 10, 20 years from now, people will go, Wow, Ridley Scott made a movie about the Crusades at a time when America was at war, at a time when there was a lot of speculation and heat on it, and he still put that movie out there. And hopefully that movie will stand up and people will appreciate it.

CS: When does "Haven" come out?
Bloom: Oh, "Haven." This September. (rubbing his hands together excitedly). The 15th of September. Thank the Lord! I don't know whether I have to go into it but Bob Yari wanted to distribute it himself, so he set up a whole company to be able to distribute it himself. What can I tell you? We're getting it done. It's definitely Sept. 15. I can't wait. I'm sure nobody else gives a s*** anymore.

CS: When "Haven" comes out, do you expect it to do different things for you?
Bloom: I think it's going to be much bigger than "Pirates 2." It's going to bust all box office records. You wait. For me, to get to do a human story amongst all these larger than life characters that I've been playing is awesome and that's what really I want to be doing. What I'm looking for now is really human stories. I did a personal human story with Cameron Crowe. I'm looking for projects like "Haven." It was a first time director. It was the first movie he ever shot in the Cayman Islands by a young Caymanian guy, 23 years old. He wrote and directed it. It was a really great experience. I shot more in one day than I have in six months on "Pirates." Eight scenes a day, it was phenomenal and I just got to do it. And I want that. It gives a spontaneity that you can't get when you've spent six hours in your trailer and then you walk on set and you do three minutes. It's hard to have that spontaneity when you're doing a big movie. I'm not saying you can't get it, but it's a challenge. Once in this movie, we would look at each other and go, am I a stuntman or an actor. I've forgotten. You kind of feel like that but then you see the end product and you go, great, there is that.

    'Pirates' In Bloom
    posted by Jas, 06/27/06
    MSN has posted their
    interview with Orlando

It didn't take long after the premiere of "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," for Orlando Bloom to realize he'd soon be sailing the seven seas again.

"I remember being at Disneyland with Johnny [Depp] and we're all sitting around with [producer Jerry Bruckheimer], and we're saying, 'Let's do a pirate movie for the rest of our lives,'" Bloom recalls of the genesis of "Dead Man's Chest." "What's cool [is that] they took what was a one-off movie, but because of what was already there in terms of character development, they were able to really take it somewhere."

That includes a whole new world of possibilities for Bloom's character, Will Turner, including an introduction to his father, pirate Bootstrap Bill, played by Stellan Skarsgård. Meeting his on-screen dad also allowed Turner to step aboard the stunning pirate ship, the Flying Dutchman, captained by Jack Sparrow's nemesis, an amazing CGI animated Davy Jones. It's just another fantastical world for Bloom to explore after being a part of the "Pirates" films, last summer's "Kingdom of Heaven" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

"I play characters that are larger than life," Bloom says. "Getting to play a knight, an elf, a prince, a soldier. I've really lived out all of my childhood fantasies." Bloom admits he wouldn't mind spending more time in the real world, as he did in Cameron Crowe's "Elizabethtown" last fall, but he's learning some good tricks as he goes from one sword-swinging action-adventure to another.

"Woo hoo! I didn't hurt myself this time," the 27-year-old actor says. "I'm a lot more conscious about not getting injured now than I was before." Once you consider that Bloom ends up spending a considerable amount of time swashbuckling on top of a moving, 20-foot-high wooden wheel and was suspended 30 feet up on the masts of numerous ships, it's clear his enthusiasm is not of the sarcastic variety. Fame has also dealt the actor the perils of becoming a heartthrob to very young girls. Most actors would be doing anything they could to distance themselves from such teenybopper obsessions. Bloom has a different take, even as he currently romances actress Kate Bosworth in private.

"Fight them off? Don't be crazy," he says incredulously. "What do I look like? Bring 'em on!"

    Interview with Johnny Depp
    posted by Jas, 06/26/06
MTV has an interview with Johnny Depp that mentions Orlando.

MTV: Orlando Bloom has said that once the "Pirates" films are over, he wants to get away from the period stuff and establish himself in some contemporary films. You've been stereotyped and pigeonholed numerous times in your career and gotten out of it. What advice would you have for him?
Depp: For Orlando? Oh boy, I don't know if there's any advice I can give anybody. [He laughs.] I think the most important thing anyone can do is just to follow your instincts. If you're afraid to take a risk or to go outside the box that you are perceived to sort of roam around in, it's okay — you should feel fear. You should acknowledge it, and look it in the eye. Then just keep moving forward. I think it's okay for an actor to actually take the chance of failing. [You should] teeter on the brink of failure.

In the film, Janey (Bosworth) takes refuge with a farm family after grandfather's suicide. But when the son tries to rape her, she injures him badly. Not knowing if he is alive or dead, Janey flees, and ultimately takes up with Ricky (Bloom), a dashing crook who is also on the lam. With the law and two hired hit-men hot on their trailer, Janey and Ricky engage in a frantic cross-country odyssey, trying to stay one step ahead of their determined pursuers. "Pirates" premiere reveals more surprises
    posted by Jas, 06/26/06
Another report on the premiere of POTC 2 on Saturday that has a brief mention of POTC 3

Disneyland's Main Street was packed with onlookers as the stars of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" arrived at the film's premiere Saturday. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley greeted hordes of fans as they made their way down Main Street to the pirate ship waiting to take them to Tom Sawyer's Island premiere. Other stars attending the premiere included Kate Bosworth and Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger with first lady Maria Shriver.

Also on hand were the creative minds behind the "Pirates" sequel, who revealed the latest news on the third film opening next year. The title of the next film, due for a Memorial Day opening, will likely be "At World's End" and will wrap up the story from the cliffhanger ending in "Dead Man's Chest," screenwriter Terry Rossio said. "It's the pirates' last stand; the end of an era," Rossio said.

The third film will also introduce Chow Yun-Fat as a Chinese pirate. All of the Caribbean scenes for the film have been shot, while interior scenes will be shot later this summer. Disney chairman Dick Cook also revealed that new animatronic figures of Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom would be added to the already-renovated Pirates of the Caribbean ride next year.

    Interview with Gore Verbinski

Coming Soon has posted their interview with POTC 2 director, Gore Verbinski

ComingSoon.net: Have you been filming the third movie while finishing up editing and post-production on the second?
Gore Verbinski: Well, we've basically had to put the third movie on hold. We've shot about a third of it. Just getting back into it, prepping, and we have 2/3rds left to shoot. So I've really been grinding, just barely making the deadline on the second one.

ComingSoon.net: How have the actors changed since making the first movie with them? Obviously, Orlando and Keira were not as experienced when you did the first movie.
Gore Verbinski: I think [they have] a little more confidence, which is always useful when you're dealing with… a lot of aspects of the production required us to shoot things very quickly or change the schedule, and it's nice to have actors who are a little more confident. It's nice to also, in that situation, have veterans. When you've got Geoffrey Rush and in this case Bill Nighy, Stellan [Skarsgård], the other actors get on their game a little bit more when they're in a scene with a tried-and-true veteran.

More confirmation about Keith Richards' appearance on POTC 3 from IESB

Jerry Bruckheimer, action movie guru producer, said this about Keith Richards, "I think we worked out some dates, as long as he doesn't fall out of any more trees..." Writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio had this to say on the subject, "Keith Richards was never intended to be in Pirates 2. He is supposed to be in 3. Johnny wanted him in but there was just no room in the story in 2. But there is in 3. According to the press, he's in he's out he's in he's out, I honestly think people made that up." Will he portray Jack's Dad? "We are not going to confirm that, that's indeterminate. We want to protect the story until the audience sees it. That gives ourselves room to make improvements."

Director Gore Verbinski say the following regarding Richards being Jack Sparrow's father, "I don't want to give it away but he will be in the third. We haven't filmed the Keith Richard part yet." Will he be his father? "I don't want to give anything away, it's open to interpretation."

    Interview with Orlando
    posted by Jas, 06/25/06
    Dark Horizons has posted their
interview with Orlando about POTC: DMC

Orlando Bloom, often private and relatively shy, walks into a Beverly Hills hotel room more buoyant than usual. Perhaps he has World Cup soccer on his mind, rather than pirates and stardom. "England's going to win, right?" he says, too loudly for comfort. But Bloom has reason to be pleased with himself, football madness aside. He recently escorted girlfriend Kate Bosworth to her Superman Returns premiere, giving her and his closest competition high marks. "It's great and I'm very proud of her."

Then when not promoting another blockbuster, the young Brit is relaxing during this Northern hemisphere summer. "I've been in London, hanging out, catching up with friends. It's been good, beautiful weather and watching the football." Yet as upbeat and relaxed as he is, Bloom is setting sail opposite heavyweights Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley in a second instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean, laughingly admitting that it was easy for the actor to rediscover his inner Pirate once again. "This time my character goes from being a straight-laced kind of upright stick in the mud to becoming more of a bit of a pirate in this one, thankfully. It was kind of like discovering my inner pirate for the first time in a way."

In the latest Pirates adventure, Captain Jack Sparrow discovers he owes a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones, Captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. With time running out, Jack must find a way out of his debt or else be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. Making matters worse, Sparrow's problems manage to interfere with the wedding plans of Bloom's Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann [Knightley], who are forced to join Jack on yet another one of his misadventures. Bloom says that playing a pirate is yet another way to fulfil the actor's childhood fantasies.

"My whole career has been fulfilling my childhood fantasies, playing characters that are larger than life, getting to play a knight, an elf, a prince, and a soldier. I've really lived out all of my childhood fantasies, so "Pirates" wasn't like living out another childhood fantasy, but just a great opportunity to work with some great people (like) Johnny Depp. That was a big draw, having always admired him as a young actor. When I signed up to do the first one it was a matter of wanting to be on set with somebody like him, to see how he handles himself, to see how he goes about it, which was a real privilege."

Bloom is currently finishing the third Pirates movie, and doesn't feel quite so exhausted shooting both films back to back. "It's a real ensemble movie so it's not like I'm on the whole time, but it was a challenge in a way because you've got the arc of two movies to cover. You can shoot a scene from the second movie in the morning and the third movie in the afternoon and trying to remember where your character is emotionally at that point in the movie can be a bit more challenging. You just have to play the truth of the moment and thankfully we got great writers to create great stories and characters and develop it so it's not just one note."

It is not Bloom's first experience making more than one film as part of a series, simultaneously. There was, after all, that miniscule trilogy called Lord of the Rings, but Bloom is hesitant to draw too many comparisons between the two experiences. "Lord of the Rings was my first experience making movies and at the time, I had no ideas how movies were done. I thought that's the way they're done, so in a way, I had nothing to compare it to. But you still have to think about where in that development you are and sometimes, when you shoot one movie, you have to think about that anyway, but that's one movie. With two, a lot more time passes, and a lot more development happens, so you've got to keep jumping back and forward doing that kind of dance. The great thing about working on something like "Pirates," is that you don't really know what to expect. Going to see it, it's like a feast for the eyes."

In this Pirates movie, audiences will see a few hair raising moments, but the actor won't be drawn on whether there'll be equally frenzied moments in next year's Pirates conclusion. "How can they top this one? They seem to keep topping it. I'm trying to remember the third one, because we're still shooting." As to what is beyond Pirates 3, Bloom is keeping his options open. "There are a couple of things I'm looking at, but one of them I'm not sure if I'm going to be doing in the next couple of months or at the end of Pirates (3). It just depends on scheduling."

Bloom's career has skyrocketed, and with success, comes the inevitability of fame and tabloid reporting on his every movie. And the actor admits he hasn't reacted so well to the intrusions into his private life. "Terribly and awfully, if the truth be known. You tell me. How does it look from the outside? I can tell you it's terrifying on the inside." He smilingly adds that hides out from the paparazzi in "a couple of caves. I like to bury myself in them and stay right out of the limelight. It's a process, man." Yet pausing reflectively, he concedes that "I wouldn't change it, because I love to do what I do." Even if that means still fighting off teenage girls. "Bring 'em on! Fight them off? Don't be crazy. What do I look like?"

And for more of Orlando, the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven hits DVD shelves this month, and that alone, makes the actor's day. "I say go out and buy the long version, mate. I'm so happy to have been a part of that process and I would go straight back into the desert in a ton of chain mail for Ridley any day of the week. He's an amazing director and I can't wait to see the long version."

New LOTR DVD out on Aug 29

Yahoo report that New Line will release three LOTR limited edition DVD sets on August 29

Three "The Lord of the Rings Limited Edition" sets, one for each movie, will roll out August 29. Each two-disc set will include the original theatrical and the extended versions of the film, along with Costa Botes' feature-length documentary on each film's creation. New to DVD are the documentaries, in which director in which director Peter Jackson and his crew gave Botes full access to the set for hours of behind-the-scenes footage.

Except for the first documentary's screening at the New Zealand Film Festival, none of the three video production diaries have been seen anywhere, Lasorsa said. "New Line has owned these documentaries and waited to make them available to the general public," Lasorsa said. "The style of these documentaries is quite different from the documentaries on the extended-edition DVDs. These are more organic, and had they come out sooner people might have been confused." While first-time buyers might be intrigued by the two versions of the film, ardent "Rings" fans who already own the two previous DVD releases might be enticed to buy a third just for the documentaries. -- Full details

It's official, Keith Richards will be in Pirates 3
    posted by Jas, 06/23/06
The Toronto Star reports that Keith Richards will probably film his Pirates 3 role in August

It's official: Rolling Stone Keith Richards will be in the next Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, due out in summer 2007. But the when, how and what of his cameo role are still under discussion. "Hopefully, he won't fall out of any more trees," producer Jerry Bruckheimer said yesterday, referring to Richards's palm tree mishap a few weeks ago that injured his brain, requiring surgery and weeks of recuperation.

Richards will probably film his Pirates 3 role in August, during a break from the current Stones tour, which has been delayed and rescheduled owing to his accident. Johnny Depp had wanted Richards to play his father in the second Pirates film, and said so during a Toronto visit last September. But that is now being dismissed as "Internet and press speculation," according to co-screenwriter Terry Rossio, because Richards was always planned for part three, not part two.

And it's not a sure thing if he'll be playing the father of Depp's character, Capt. Jack Sparrow, even though Depp modelled his performance on Richards. Director Gore Verbinski said with a wink that Richards' role would be "open to interpretation." All he has to do is show up healthy for the gig.

Orlando Bloom talks: It's great fun to go to work everyday on Pirates
    posted by Jas, 06/22/06
    Made in Atlantis has
an interview with Orlando about POTC: DMC as well as interviews with the other cast. Thanks to JDZ for the tip. Spoilers ahead! oh and check the gallery section while you're there, I think there are some new images there.

When he was at drama school, Orlando Bloom never quite imagined himself in action adventure movies. As he notes with a smile, it's funny how things turn out. His first major project was playing Legolas the elf in Peter Jackson's award winning Lord of the Rings trilogy and recently, he starred in Ridley Scott's action epic, Kingdom of Heaven. And let's not forget playing Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean. How could we?

Along with Johnny Depp as the lovable rogue Jack Sparrow and Keira Knightley, as Elizabeth Swann the governor's daughter who falls for Will, Orlando obviously, and understandably, holds the first movie in high esteem. “Oh we had a fabulous time making it,” he says. “Lovely people, fantastic locations and a great director. It was one of the best professional experiences I've ever had.” And so it's easy to understand why he was keen to repeat the experience on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and Pirates 3, which have been filmed, virtually, back to back.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski have reunited their key creative team - cast, writers, crew - and added some new talent - Bill Nighy plays Davy Jones, the underworld captor of sea faring souls - and Bloom couldn't be happier to be back. “I really enjoy doing it,” he says. “I get to work with you know Johnny and Gore Verbinski and all these great talents. It's amazing because it's a chance for me to continue to learn my craft from some more experienced actors.”

Orlando admits that he never dreamed that he would be making quite so many action movies. But one of the many benefits is that his sword fighting technique gets better and better. “I used to have to rehearse for weeks and weeks in advance but now I can have like three or four sessions with the stunt guys and I can pick it up much quicker which is a bonus,” he says.

“I find myself in all these action adventure movies and they are fantastic but I never thought I would be doing so many of them. But I have to say I really love them. It's great fun to go to work everyday on Pirates and it `s got the same kind of kinetic energy as the first one, only there's even more.” Orlando knew better than most that filming two sequels virtually back to back would be a rollercoaster ride and a supreme challenge for all concerned. There was a two-month hiatus last year and another break whilst Verbinski edited Dead Man's Chest ready for release this summer.

He spent almost two years in New Zealand making Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy and Pirates 2 and 3 was, in some ways at least, a similar experience. "I am reminded of the experience on Rings where it was that feeling of a huge steam train and everyone is just grabbing hold of it, trying to get a ride and letting is blow out of steam a bit,” he says. “But at the same time that madness, that crazy kind of wild beast that is running away from you is what gives it that energy and excitement and it makes the tension that much more palpable.”

Born in Canterbury, England 29 years ago, Orlando has enjoyed a remarkable career since Lord of the Rings enjoyed phenomenal box office and critical success. He played Paris opposite Brad Pitt in Troy, a milkman turned boxer in the small budget British comedy The Calcium Kid, was reunited with Ridley Scott for the starring role in Kingdom of Heaven - they had previously worked together on Black Hawk Down - and recently, played opposite Kirsten Dunst in Cameron Crowe's romantic comedy Elizabethtown.

This interview was conducted during a break from filming on the Universal Studios sound stage in Hollywood.

Q: So how's it going, what is it like compared to working on the first one?
A: It's really exciting, I have to say. You probably know that we had to sign up to do a second movie when we did the first movie and the idea of doing two and three back to back was something that came up and I thought `This is great, family fun entertainment' And I really enjoy doing it, I get to work with you know Johnny and Gore Verbinski and all these great talents. It's amazing because it's a chance for me to continue to learn my craft from some more experienced actors.

Q: Do you ask them for any advice?
A: All the time, yeah, and they are great, they are really good. The other day I was doing some press for Elizabethtown and thinking that I find myself in all these action adventure movies and they are fantastic but I never thought I would be doing so many of them. And I love them. They are fantastic but I never thought I'd be doing so many of them - sword fighting stuff. But I have to say I really love them. It's great fun to go to work everyday on Pirates and it `s got the same kind of kinetic energy as the first one, only there's even more. I guess after the success of the first one they, they've been able to elaborate with costume, with set design, with locations and we've been to some amazing locations. In the first one, there wasn't so many shots of turquoise ocean that you can't imagine we were in the Caribbean because we were filming in like St Vincent. This time we have been filming in some pretty amazing places like the Exumas in the Bahamas which has that particularly vibrant white sand and blue ocean. It will look amazing and just gives such a rich colour texture on screen.

Q: How much easier are the fight scenes for you now?
A: It's like when you start learning dialogue. It gets easier the more dialogue you have the easier it comes to learn it. The body is a muscle and the more you do you get `muscle' memory. There is basic parry routine that works for pretty much any sword fight and you vary it, depending on what sword you are using. But yeah, it has gotten a lot easier. I used to have to rehearse for weeks and weeks in advance but now I can have like three or four sessions with the stunt guys and I can pick it up much quicker which is a bonus.

Q: Is it true that your character is developing a darker side in Pirates 2?
A: Yeah, it slowly develops in the third movie. But, listen it is still a Disney pirates movie and it's not like I am going to go around slaughtering people unnecessarily. It's not like I'm Hayden Christensen in Star Wars as Darth Vadar. But there is character development in terms of the relationship with my father and my desire to release my father from his physical imprisonment, which is the form that he takes, as do all the pirates under Davy Jones' command. They all become these kind of grotesque sea creature monster things which is basically a new and improved and excitingly different version of the skeletal pirates. So my desire is to free him from that prison and somehow get the girl at the end, go with that connection to Elizabeth. And so I think the darkness comes in a sense that you are not quite sure what angle Will is coming from. He manipulates things in order to get what he wants and he has kind of gotten wise to Jack Sparrow in some respect. He has learned a few tricks from Jack Sparrow so he playing the game a little bit himself, as are all the characters.

Q: What sort of a tricks?
A: You will have to wait and see I am afraid. But all the characters actually have that kind of a development. It's exciting because with a sequel you think, `what are we going to do? How can we recreate the magic? Shouldn't we have just left it?” But, actually, with all the same writing team, Ted (Elliott) and Terry (Rossio) Penny Rose doing the costume, everyone, the same. OK, the production is, I think, a little different perhaps in design but it's all just improved really and the character development is really improved and it certainly doesn't feel like a poor man's version of the first one. And I'd be the first one to go “whoops” if it did. But Gore is such a fantastic director. He has so much vibrancy, so much life and energy to do this sort of thing. It's remarkable. It is kind of crazy doing two movies back to back because it's just such a huge undertaking and I am reminded of the experience on Rings where it was that feeling of a huge steam train and everyone is just grabbing hold of it, trying to get a ride and letting is blow out of steam a bit. But at the same time that madness, that crazy kind of wild beast that is running away from you is what gives it that energy and excitement and it makes the tension that much more palpable.

Q: Is this the most exciting project you've worked on?
A: Well, I had the most ridiculous good fortune when I left drama school to work on a project like Rings that went into three movies. That was an incredible break out for me but Pirates really sealed the deal in terms of giving me opportunities to do movies like Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown or this little movie I did called Haven and it's given me the kind of fan base which has enabled me to move forward and to be able to make choices. Moving forwards I'll be able to make interesting choices that I always hoped to be able to make anyway. Pirates was doubly amazing because it came from the side, out of left field and when this script was going round town a lot of people just passed over it because it was like a Disney adventure ride. It was one of those scripts that nobody really jumped on and then we jumped on it and it was a really good script So it was exciting in that sense because it was like' wow `who knew it would have that kind of cachet and success?'

Q: How do the sequels differ from the first movie?
A: Well if you veer too far away from what you achieved in the first one then you let the fans down because you know there is something that is working there. If you try and be too clever, you'll lose the integrity of what was working in the first place but they had to do something better than the pirates turning skeletal in the moonlight. And that I think has definitely been achieved through this character Davy Jones (played by Bill Nighy and his pirates that, like I said, have this grotesque formation from living at the bottom of the ocean which is really interesting. It's cool, because it is within the myth and legend of piracy and Davy Jones and it maintains the integrity of that which is cool. It feels like it is not just flying off into some far fetched realm of Hollywood making another movie for the sake of making more money .It is maintaining some integrity in the sense that it's based in pirate legend.

Q: What did you want to get from playing Will this time around?
A: Listen I am definitely confined in the sense that Will is the poster boy, the guy that gets the girl. But the darker side has definitely taken me into a place where I can have some interesting storyline and feel like I am developing the role. But it is still within the realms of making a pirate movie. Johnny's playing the guy and Geoffrey is the outlandish pirate captain and now Bill Nighy is doing some fantastic work and Chow Yun-Fat brings this whole new thing. Singapore and going into the East gives an amazing new flavour to the (third) movie. So it's really very exciting.

Q: You have become such a public figure, are you still enjoying that or is it becoming a little intrusive?
A: It's really interesting and amazing in the sense that I don't get out of my car and walk home and get swamped by people. It's funny because I try to keep a low profile as much as possible because that is kind of who I am and when I am at premiers or whatever then that's when people know you are going to be around and it creates that kind of excitement. It's like the circus coming to town. I have used this analogy before. People get wrapped up in it and I am always really grateful to the fans because like I said, I have had amazing opportunities and the studios that I have worked with have bankrolled some pretty big movies on the basis of the fact that I do have a great support system and a movie like Kingdom, I got a shot at, you know. It's funny to me because it makes over $200m worldwide and it is still considered not to have done so well. But it is just that Hollywood has such high expectations. It's crazy. But I got to do that role and it was just fantastic, I am very proud of it and a lot of that is down to the fact that I have great support of people who come to see me at events or premiers. So I am totally glad about that. But it will never be normal; it will always just feel like it is just something that I just have to get on with. It's a lot of energy coming at you and it's a little bit like “whoa”, you know? Sort of crazy.

Q: It's interesting because Keira is probably going through the same thing and you guys go back a long way don't you? Do you remember the first time you met?
A: Yeah I do, we met at the Ivy. It was so funny because Gore had a dinner for us to get together at the Ivy and I remember we left and she just snuck out and I got like hammered because the Ivy is like one of those places where you get hammered (laughs). I admire her in such a massive way: the choices that she has made, the directors that she has got to work with, the way that she handles herself. I was just looking at her the other day and she is handling a sword, doing this whole sword routine. She's the most beautiful woman on the set and you know still like, she's got that kind of ability to sort of rough it with the lads and still look ethereal and can still be the beauty and the talent that she is.

Q: She kind of said you first came across each other in London when you were going for auditions.
A: I hadn't really hung out with her . She was working more than me. When I finished drama school, she had already done movies .She had already had star billing .She was making a mark for herself in a movies like Bend it like Beckham. She shot that before. She did stuff like that while I was at drama school. We did do an audition together. Yes, we did an audition for a Russian project, that's right. I had forgotten.

Q: What do you do in your free time?
A: Free time is sparse but I just keep it as normal as possible. I have dogs, I have a great family, I have good friends.

Q: Did you have your dog with you in the Caribbean?
A: Yeah, he is a very well traveled dog. It's very expensive to travel with a dog but he is like my baby.

    Q: Where's home?
A: London, yeah, I am never there but London, yeah.

Toronto Star has an interview with Johnny Depp

Co-star Bloom said Depp told him during the making of the first Pirates film that he shouldn't listen to what people declare to be success or failure, when it comes to making artistic choices. "He said, `I made a career out of making movies that are considered to be failures,'" repeated Bloom. Depp laughed when told of Bloom's remark. And he agreed with it. He'd rather have fun risking failure than be bored by going for certain success. And yet he's dangerously close to being reliable with this franchise, which is going to do extremely well, no matter what movie critics might say. -- Full interview

    Bill Nighy Q&A
    posted by Jas, 06/20/06
Another interview with Bill Nighy from Time Out.

So how did you end up with a part in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' sequels?
It seems they thought of me when they wanted someone to inhabit a half-squid, half-crab sea creature monster. They needed somebody to do that and apparently I drifted into their minds.

    Is that a compliment?
I have to take it as a compliment because otherwise I'd kill myself. But as [director] Gore Verbinski said: 'How many times do you get to make a pirate movie?' It is an odd gig though, because my crew are half-man, half fish – lobsters and hammer-heads – and we are seriously scary.

Do you worry about going over-the-top in a role like that?
Well, I don't know what the top is – it's always mystified me – over-the-top, under-the-top. But movie reality is different to normal reality, and squid reality is another level. I was quite self-conscious early on, but I worked out I had to go big straight away, as soon as the rehearsals started, to break the spell of self-loathing and the wave of shame that comes over you doing such a silly job. I mean, he's got a crab leg, a hand claw and tentacles coming out of his chin. This man has a beard that can play the organ, so where's the top there?

So what was it like that first day on set?
It's insane – you walk out onto this amazing set and you've got to do something. But the whole thing is insane. I'm used to independent British movies, where you've got a brolly and a pastie, so I'm not used to that level of production. And it's fantastic – it's virtually all the people that did the first one. The cast are the same with some additions – myself and Tom Hollander are the nasty pieces of work, and Stellan Skarsgård is also involved.

So it'll be your fault if it goes wrong.
Yup, they'll blame me and I'll never work again

The British beauty jumped at the chance to get ugly in the new movie, and loves the way director Gore Verbinski made her look. She says, "I feel it's really liberating to play someone who's not pretty. In Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, I have a really great role. "She's kind of an older witch doctor with black lips, rotten teeth, and dirty hair." Harris is now desperate to star in a period drama after writing a dissertation on black people in 18th century England at university. She says, "I've always loved Jane Austen novels... so I'd love to do a period drama - something where I can wear corsets."

    Johnny Depp interview in Newsweek
    posted by Jas, 06/18/06
Johnny Depp graces the cover of the June 26 issue of Newsweek magazine which also has an interview with him where he talked about POTC: DMC among other things

Returning director Gore Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and team have cranked up the action this time around. One huge set piece includes an elaborate three-way sword fight on a massive water wheel that has snapped off its frame and is rolling at top speed through the jungle. ("It's those moments when you realize how absurd your job is," Depp says. "It's great fun, but it was a bastard to shoot.") Luckily, they've also given Depp plenty of playtime, too. Even more than in the first film, Depp's exaggerated expressions and unexpected line deliveries turn "cute" moments into hilarious ones. At one point, Elizabeth tells Jack, "You're a good man." Depp replies, sloppily, under his breath, "All evidence to the contrary."

Sitting in a bungalow at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, Depp flashes a bit of Captain Jack every time he opens his mouth. Those gold pirate teeth are bonded onto his own. With the shoot for the third "Pirates" resuming in August, Depp figured it was just easier to keep them. "They don't come off until the ride stops," he says, and smiles. "It's a horrible process. I didn't want to go through yanking them off and putting them back on. And it leaves some residue of the character behind."

It was Depp's desire to make a movie for his kids that led him to "Pirates." In a visit to the Disney lot about five years ago, he mentioned to studio chairman Dick Cook that he'd been watching a lot of Disney movies with his daughter, loved them and was hoping to voice a character in a Pixar movie. Cook mentioned that the studio was developing a movie based on the theme-park ride "Pirates of the Caribbean." "And he got very excited," Cook recalls. "He said, 'Like a real pirate movie? With swords?' And I said, 'Yeah—with swords.' And he said, 'I'm in'."

As is now well known to "Pirates" fans, studio executives were nonplused when they began to see the footage of Depp in character. "The studio was, like, 'Is he gay? Is he drunk? We don't know what he's doing!'" says producer Bruckheimer. "It took a little while to calm everybody down." Depp's not ready to let go of Captain Jack just yet. "He's a blast to play," he says. "I'll be in a deep, dark depression saying goodbye to him." He laughs. "I'll keep the costume and just prance around the house, entertain the kids." Or the rest of the world. "Maybe 'Pirates 4, 5 and 6'," he says. "If they had a good script, why not? I mean, at a certain point, the madness must stop, but for the moment, I can't saythat he's done." -- Full interview
