An interview with Geoffrey Rush
posted by Jas, 07/30/06
The Age has an interview with Geoffrey Rush and mention that he's about to finish filming Pirates 3
He is also just about to finish filming the third instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean in the Bahamas, as Captain Barbossa. This is about as mass-market as it gets, especially for Rush. He says, simply: "It's important that the script and actors and director are good, but sometimes it really helps if it coincides with the kids' holidays and some warm weather. "Everyone thinks, 'What a doddle,' " he says, "but last year for Pirates I made eight trips — to Los Angeles, then Miami, then Barbados, then a boat to an island, 30 hours all up, eight times, so that takes the edge off all the fun because you spend the time you are there jetlagged out of your brain, hating the tropics and hating being alive and then coming home to Melbourne jetlagged for a couple of weeks then going away to do it all again."
Central Coast could be site of 'Pirate' invasion

Parts of Pirates 3 will be filmed at the Guadalupe Dunes. Shooting is expected to take place in late fall, and will last one to three days.
Parts of the third installment of the highly successful "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies will be filmed at the Guadalupe Dunes, according to Martine White, Santa Barbara County Film Commissioner. White said the filming of "Pirates of the Caribbean III" is expected to take place in late fall, and will last one to three days.
It is unknown whether the shooting will bring the film's stars - Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley - to the area, and White emphasized that even though the dunes have already been scouted by the director and department heads, a sudden script change could result in the scene being cut from the film.
"It's never definite until they actually come and begin shooting," said White. Meanwhile, Walt Disney Pictures is doing its part to keep the shoot under wraps. The film's publicist, Michael Singer, said the filmmakers have had a "closed-up policy" since production began in 2005, and he cannot release any information about filming. Guadalupe's mayor said he has been hearing rumors that "Pirates" would film here for about a year now.

Then one of the effects guys that worked on Pirates came out and went into a lot of technical detail about how they created the effects for Davy Jones. They showed a lot of side by side shots of the actors in their motion capture suits and what the finished characters looked like. He also brought along a kind of gag reel that showed some of the jokes the animators did at the end of filming. The 2 that caught my eye were the 'Krispy Kreamed' scene. They made the rolling water wheel a krispy kreme doughnut. A lot of the animators had just worked on SW3 and showed a scene where Elizabeth was wielding 2 light sabers instead of swords. They then showed what I thought was a fairly long preview of the next movie. 2 of the scenes they showed that caught my eye was where Sparrow tells off the 2 women from Tortuga in a funny exchange after which they both slap the crap out of him. There is another scene where Sparrow asked if anyone rescued him just for the sake of rescuing him or liking him and all were quiet...except the monkey raised his hand. It looked pretty cool and should be a fun movie next year.

Orlando talks climate change
posted by Jas, 07/28/06
Kotaro reports that Orlando is currently in Japan, he arrived yesterday morning. Orlando gave a speech about Global Cool at the Fuji Rock Festival 2006, which is held in Naeba Ski Resort, Yuzawa-machi, Niigata, Japan. The event will be aired on WoWow on August 25. Fujirock Express has more pics of Orlando at the festival and don't forget to check Ka-Bloom for more pics to drool, I mean look at.
An hour after launching the Global Cool initiative at Fuji Rock 2006, Orlando Bloom and Global Cool founder Dan Morrell took the stage once more, this time in the dragonfly-specked Gypsy Avalon field. Talking to a crowd of Japanese festival-goers, the pair were joined by Steve Howard, head of The Climate Group.
Bloom told the crowd at the mountain-hemmed festival site, "This is a beautiful environment for a concert; we can save this environment." Morrell and Howard went on to explain the campaign in this intimate setting, inviting questions from the crowd. One passionate Japanese reveller asked, "Why are you telling us this when the Americans are the ones who backed out of the Kyoto protocol?" America signed the protocol, which aims to prevent climate change, in 1998, but has yet to ratify it or put it into place. Morrell replied, "We want you to forget what everyone else is doing, and just look at what you can do yourself."
Before the trio and their translator left the stage, Bloom made a parting comment. "This is all about small things that make a big difference," he said, adding with a smile, "Enjoy the party! Fuji Rocks…" The Gypsy Avalon stage is powered by 'soft energy', generated by bio-diesel fuel from recyled salad oil and solar power, and represents the ethos of Fuji Rock's carbon-neutral programme.

Director Frank E. Flowers talks about plans to screen Haven in Cayman
The film Haven, directed and written by Caymanian Frank E. Flowers, is planned for limited release from Friday, 15 September. Haven, filmed in Cayman during 2003, was originally due for release in April, however Mr. Flowers said it was put back to September to avoid coinciding with the release of the blockbuster movie Pirates of the Caribbean.
Haven, the director's first full length feature, will initially be shown in eight cities across the US, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Miami before expanding to 40 cities by the end of the theatrical run. Mr. Flowers said that they are also working with the local cinema in Cayman. "It is a big priority for us to have a screening in Cayman," the director said.
Plans are currently under way for a Cable and Wireless sponsored screening to be shown in Cayman during September. At the time of going to press C&W were unable to confirm any details. The film, which cost in the region of US$6 million to make, involves a shady US businessman (Bill Paxton) who flees to Cayman to avoid federal prosecution. At the same time a Romeo–and–Juliet style love affair is chronicled by Orlando Bloom and Zoe Saldana. Haven has had numerous mentions in the international press, thanks to Orlando Bloom.
"He has been very supportive of the campaign and is very excited about the film," the director said. "Obviously he is very proud of Haven and small films need support like this." Since the filming of Haven wrapped up, Mr. Flowers has branched out into the music industry. Commenting on the film, Mr. Flowers reflected: "Haven was especially inspiring as it was such a mammoth undertaking for my first film. To have it out in the world, especially in Cayman, is such an honour, to see a slice of Cayman's culture on the big screen. I am excited to see how it all goes over."

More description of the Pirates 3 clip shown at Comic Con from IGN of a video clip from P3 shown at Comic Con, Spoilers ahead! stop reading if you don't want to know
After the cliffhanger ending of Dead Man's Chest, it appeared Captain Jack Sparrow may have met his maker. Considering he showed up in many of the clips of footage, he is apparently alive and well in the third film. Also seen were some glimpses of the new character Sao Feng, played by Chow Yun-Fat. There were also shots of a large sea battle, with Captain Jack displaying some of his non-traditional battle tactics. There were also shots of swordfights, and scenes with dialogue that show the traditional Pirates of the Caribbean humor will also be present in this sequel. Every major character that appeared in the first two films seemed to appear in this clip, so it would appear the series will be going out with a big bang.

Interview with Mackenzie Crook

The Guardian has an interview with Mackenzie Crook where he talked about filming Pirates 2 among other things
One afternoon we were shooting on White Cay in the Bahamas. To get there we left at four in the morning - then there was half an hour in the car, plus 45 minutes in powerboats to base camp, which was two vast container ships anchored about a mile from the Cay. There we were costumed and made up, and then smaller speedboats would take us halfway to land before the water got too shallow and we waded the last half-mile. Our movements on the small exposed area of sand and scrub were restricted owing to a unique species of iguana whose rights came before ours, so most of the work was carried out in the shallows. Legend has it that some of the first crew members to arrive on the island were "going commando" and the sun's glare off the blinding white sand, quite frankly, burned their balls. We were advised to wear undergarments.
And even here, after four hours of sitting in a rowing boat waiting for the correct lighting conditions, I found myself getting irritated because an unidentified 6ft shark was taking an interest in the proceedings and causing the crew to run for land or boat. -- Full interview

P3 teaser trailer on Thanksgiving
posted by Jas, 07/23/06
Movieweb spoke to Pirates 3 visual effects supervisor, John Knoll at the Comic Con and he revealed that we will probably see Pirates 3 teaser trailer closer to Thanksgiving and then a story oriented trailer in earlier Spring. He also talked about what to expect in Pirates 3
"All of the things we could not do in Pirates 2, we are gonna do in Pirates 3. There were not a lot of ship to ship battles in the second film and we are gonna change that." He went on to say that "Characters in Daveys crew... some of the guys who were not featured will be getting some close-ups." It also appears that now that they have done Davey Jones once, making him in this movie is going to be a lot easier. "We do not have to figure out the process anymore. Animating and lighting him... is no longer a time consuming process."
Knoll was then asked if Davey Jones could be improved. "I think we did a pretty good job." Knoll said that that he looks at Pirates 3 as an opportunity. "Since these characters are in 3D, animated all the way through, we thought we could better the performance to something close to motion capture quality. The goal was to make it easier."
How about there being new characters in the third installment? "I cannot say anything specific. The same imagination from the other films is still present." It had long been thought that mermaids might make an appearance in the new film. "No," Knoll laughed. "You will have to talk to the writers about that."

Chow Yun-Fat's character had many speaking lines in the clip, which featured lots of Singapore floating village shots, a rescue Captain Jack Sparrow scene, a scene where Sparrow has to convince the crew to run back and forth on the shipdeck to rock a ship over, Jack the undead monkey in Chinese Warrior armor, shots of Barbossa and Sparrow amid a huge shipboard sword battle, and a swordfight between Sparrow and Davy Jones atop a crows nest in a giant storm.

Pirates director tired but happy
posted by Jas, 07/22/06
Stuff has an interview with director Gore Verbinski where he talked about Pirates 2 and Pirates 3 a bit of spoiler ahead.
But is it true that a lot of people had doubts about Johnny Depp's performance before the first film came out?
The first time out I think everyone thought, just what is he doing? After the movie came out, Geoffrey Rush [Barbossa in The Curse of the Black Pearl] came up to me and said, Kudos to Johnny because all of us thought he was going to be an embarrassment, that he was operating way outside the quadrant.
There are some spectacular sequences in Dead Man's Chest. What was the most difficult to get on screen?
The actors always complained about the sword fight on the wheel, which involves Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Jack Davenport in a three-way sword fight. They were tied into the wheel and they were being rolled through the jungle, so it wasn't easy. But I think it turned out really well.
Any clues about what we can expect from Pirates 3?
The next film goes to Singapore, so there's a lot more Asian influence. You're going to see the pirate lords and a lot more of the Davy Jones love story -- what went wrong and why he did what he did -- and how that mirrors Will and Elizabeth's love story. There's also a different villain, or at least a lot more of the East India Company, which was the 17th century equivalent of a big multinational corporation and determined to stamp out piracy once and for all. With Davy Jones it's personal. When he kills, it's not random. But it's much scarier when a corporation does it. It's much more clinical. It's how the railroad was in the American West and what it did to the gunfighter. There's a great scene in Once Upon a Time in the West where the head of the railroad gets a gun to his head and he says there's only one thing more powerful than that and he pulls out a wad of cash. And it completely neutralizes the villain. And I think that's what the last part of the Pirates trilogy is about, that it's the end of an era because in a corrupt society there's no place for honest thieves.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has already mentioned the possibility of a Pirates 4. Will you be along for the ride?
Never say never. Right now I'm exhausted, but I always feel different after a rest. What I can tell you is that Johnny Depp has certainly not done playing this character. -- Full interview

More Tia Dalma in Pirates 3
posted by Jas, 07/20/06
MTV reports that Naomie Harris will have more screen time in Pirates 3
Its second chapter is already the highest-grossing film of the year, with the biggest box-office opening of all time. Next month, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" step in front of movie cameras again to finish their third flick, "At World's End." According to series newcomer Naomie Harris, the seemingly endless box-office love for "Dead Man's Chest" has given the actors a renewed sense of enthusiasm. "But it's also more intimidating as well, because we have to make sure that 'Pirates 3' matches up," she admitted. In the third film, Harris gets considerably more screen time, and her voodoo-priestess character gets considerably more power. "Tia Dalma gets to go on the ship with all the other characters, and you find out that she's a lot more powerful than you realized in 'Pirates 2.' " Laughing, she added that she can't wait until the film's May 25 release: "We'll try and break some new records with 'Pirates 3.' "

"Pirates" FX Guru John Knoll
posted by Jas, 07/19/06
Coming Soon has an interview with Pirates 2 special effects supervisor, John Knoll.
CS: When I talked to Gore, he still had to shoot about 2/3rds of the movie. Is there enough preplanning that you can be working on certain effects shots even before they've begun shooting?
Knoll: Yeah, we're working one of the big set piece scenes. There's a lot of R 'n' D (research and development) that's underway right now.
CS: Is there anything as complicated as the Kraken or Davy Jones that you have to work on for the third movie?
Knoll: Oh, yeah. They haven't given up on the bold ideas.
CS: Can you talk about the looming deadline for the next movie, since you must have less time between now and the Memorial Day release date Disney has set for it.
Knoll: It's a little bit shorter production schedule than we had last time. It's six weeks less on the tail end that we had this time, but on "Pirates 2," we were shooting up until March, so we're going to wrap up principal photography in October, at least that's what we're saying now, so the post-production, editing portion of it won't be quite so frantic. Visual effects are probably going to be just as frantic as they were on "Pirates 2," meaning the size of the show is probably about the same number of shots, and from the time we get the finished cuts turned over to us to work on, until it's due, it's going to be about the same time span we had on "Pirates 2." -- Full interview

'Pirates'' Loot Tops $258.2 Million
posted by Jas, 07/16/06
LA Times report that POTC 2 is the first movie this year to hit the quarter-billion-dollar mark. It grossed an estimated $62.2 million in it's second weekend at the box office in the U.S. and Canada to bring its 10-day total to a record $258.2 million.
"Pirates" became the first movie this year to better the quarter-billion-dollar mark, and the fourth to top $200 million. Based on early returns, "Pirates" has a good shot at becoming the seventh picture ever to exceed $400 million at the U.S. and Canadian box offices, said Brandon Gray, president of BoxOfficeMojo.com.
Worldwide, "Pirates" could become the third picture to break the $1-billion mark, joining "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."
"Pirates" has no chance, however, of challenging the all-time record grosses of $600.8 million in the U.S. and Canada and $1.8 billion worldwide, both held by "Titanic," Gray said. "It's not as complete and compelling a movie experience," he said. "It's more of a middle movie with a cliffhanger ending, but you really have to satisfy audiences to get them to see a picture over and over again." Even so, Gray said, audiences obviously like "Pirates," which bodes well for the third installment in the series, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." That movie is due out Memorial Day weekend 2007. -- Full report

Ireland online reports that Orlando is considering other career options after Hollywood
Movie heart-throb Orlando Bloom is considering alternative careers should fickle Hollywood turn its back on him. The 29-year-old is wowing audiences in mega-hit movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead man's Chest, but he still worries he will be forced to take up another discipline. He says: "I'd be a photographer or maybe a sculptor. I'd photograph wildlife or be a documentary photographer. I would go to war zones and stuff. "I think it's really brave and courageous but also a really hard thing to do because you see those photos of somebody dying on the street and you think: 'Why is that person taking a photo and not jumping in to help.' But those photos move the imagination."

Orlando Bloom on his pirate, not private life

Another interview with Orlando from Bay Area Reporter
The fact that he is currently dating Superman Returns star Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane) doesn't seem to bother his fan-base. "Girls giggle and point, no matter where I go, as if I am some high school star soccer player or something," he laughed. "But I like my privacy, and try not to make too much of a spectacle of myself. I save that for the big screen."
Later this summer, Bloom will appear in a little movie, Haven, which he finished filming two years ago on the Cayman Islands. "It's this crazy, kooky little movie directed by a 24-year-old kid, Frank E. Flowers. It's really a hard movie to describe. It's independent, action, mystery, but not really. The movie was a lot of fun to make, and I'm very proud of it and can't wait until it gets a theatrical release. But it is not easy getting financing for movies that have not already been financed by a huge studio."
Will there be a fourth Pirates, perhaps of the Atlantic? "Ha, ha," he laughed. "Very funny, but with Disney, you never know. Let's see how the second and third do. If audiences love them, there's no telling how many more there could be." Maybe even with Bloom as the star, if Depp gets killed off. Hint, hint. -- full interview

Extras air date
posted by Jas, 07/13/06
Funny.co.uk reports that the new Extras series will air on September 15, 2006.
Ricky Gervais has announced the date for the airing for the new series of Extras. If you didn't know, the series features around struggling actor Andy Millman (Gervais) and friend Maggie (Ashley Jensen) as they work with, around and on real 'A' list celebrities who satirise themselves. This series has been abound by rumour and conjecture as to who would be appearing, mainly because Gervais had been making up stories and dropping random names to the press. However names having become more concrete it seems that Gervais has upped the ante in the established celebs pot and will be featuring at least two an episode. The likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Diana Rigg, Stephen Fry, David Bowie, Orlando Bloom and Sir Ian McKellen who Andy, supposedly, has a snog with. Gervais stated on a recent podcast that this eagerly anticipated series will air on 15th September 2006 so start the rumour-mill for the Extras 3 cameos!

A pirate's life for Orlando
posted by Jas, 07/12/06
Another press interview with Orlando about POTC 2, so the answer is more or less the same.
Again, the Kraken was computer-generated. What did you think of the finished sequences?
"Surprised. It was phenomenal. The Kraken was weird, because you obviously never saw it. I was standing on top of the mast, stabbing at the air and swinging around on the ship. It was a crazy sequence because you were just slashing at the air and hope that it's going to be as terrifying as you are making it look."
What were your hardest and most fun scenes to do?
"I think one of my hardest scenes was the sequence with Davy Jones, where I'm feeling through the tentacles because there weren't any tentacles there. It was kind of an odd thing to be doing. I loved doing all the action. It was fun to do my Errol Flynn number. I enjoyed jumping off the mast and doing that sort of thing. A movie set is quite a controlled environment so you're able to be a big kid, especially on a pirate movie. You can get to do all of that mad stuff and know that you've got wires there and people watching you."
Who do you prefer: Legolas or Will Turner?
"That's a tricky one. I have such fond memories of being in New Zealand and working on Lord of the Rings. It was my first experience of film and it's very close to my heart. But Will is more me than Legolas and I'm enjoying playing him. He's developing nicely as well. I think the writers Ted [Elliott] and Terry [Rossio] have done such a great job of taking the characters and evolving them for us. They really write for Johnny so beautifully but they started writing for us in a way that made it a lot of fun to play." -- Full interview

Depp on Pirates 3, "At World's End" not the title

IGN has Johnny Depp talking about Pirates 3 and they report that according to a Disney rep "At World's End" is not the title of the third film, the new title will be announce in the next few months.
The shoot has moved to a Shanghai set currently housed within Universal studios. Depp has been shooting scenes with a new Pirates cast member: "With Chow Yun-Fat…" He says that the new films will take the eccentric sparrow to some new places that audiences should enjoy. "Oh, I think that, yeah, there's some kind of fun surprises that they're posing, sort of messing with."

Box Office Prophets staff talk about the Pirates 2 actors and the movie success
Joel Corcoran: Based on the Curse of the Black Pearl, people wanted to see a great movie experience for what it should be: pure escapism. And the public wasn't disappointed.
Tim Briody: Since when are Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley quirky? And boy, do they also owe Depp a good portion of their careers. Bloom is officially the biggest luck-sack ever, having the Rings movies and now this.
Reagen Sulewski: He's got a wing at the Mark Hamill Hall of Fame all designed and ready to go.
Kim Hollis: He and Ian McKellen are the unlikeliest mega movie openers ever.
Joel Corcoran: I meant "quirky" for everyone outside of Bloom and Knightly. They provided the element of glamour to the film, or at least prettiness.
Kim Hollis: Does the performance of Dead Man's Chest similarly boost Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley's careers this time around?
Reagen Sulewski: They certainly will get the pick of their next few projects. But no one sane is crediting them with the success of this franchise.
Kim Hollis: The other thing about both Bloom and Knightley is that there seems to be a tightly knit set of British actors that continues to get work together. Their fame is actually a little different than that of the typical American movie star. -- Full discussion

Orlando Bloom breaks hearts and his own head in DMC
posted by Jas, 07/11/06
Sean from IF Magazine wrote in to say that they have an exclusive interview with Orlando.
iF: How did you do the wheel fight?
Bloom: They rented a wheel and hooked it up to the back of a truck. They moved it up and down hills and we were on harnesses and moving with it. It was complicated. The production team that came up with the way of shooting that deserves a medal.
iF: Do you have to choose your roles more carefully now that you've gotten so big?
Bloom: I've been in big movies, but I still feel like I'm learning a lot about my craft. I don't think you ever stop. I try to be specific about my choices. I did a small movie called Haven between the big ones. I crave working on those small independent movies because I love going to see those myself. That comes out September 15. I'm trying to do another small one called Seasons of Dust right after Pirates finishes. I'm trying to mix the cool, independent stuff with the big stuff, but it's been difficult finding the right roles. It's been an interesting ride as far as my career pendulum is concerned.
iF: Are you as romantic as your character?
Bloom: No, I'm completely unromantic and I'm definitely one of the troublemakers. There are broken bottles and hearts all over the Caribbean. I had to leave a few stray dogs behind and they were very brokenhearted. Poor little pups, but they've got good homes. -- full interview

Orlando articles

Couple of articles that mention Orlando. Update: An interview with Orlando from NJ Media Group
Orlando Bloom is intimidated by Johnny Depp. The handsome actor - who stars with Depp in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies - admits he was terrified of working with the Hollywood heavyweight at first. He said: "Starring with Johnny Depp raises the bar. It really does. It's intimidating sometimes too."
However, the 22-year-old actor - who plays hero Will Turner in the pirate adventure films - says he soon struck up a friendship with his mega-famous co-star.
He told Britain's OK! magazine: "Working with Johnny was really great. He's cool." -- more from Female First (thanks Preksuperteacher)
Pirates co-star Orlando Bloom says the most important lesson the veteran Depp taught him is: "It's about the experience." Bloom recounts a key conversation: "He said to me really early on, 'I've made a career out of making movies that are failures, or considered failures.' And, to me, he's had one of the most courageous, exciting, spontaneous careers to date. So, sometimes, you have to take the knock." -- more from London Free Press

Crisscross has a report on the POTC 2 promo in Japan
Johnny Depp couldn't help but be moved when he arrived at Narita airport this week and was greeted by about 3,500 fans, many of them dressed in pirate costumes, yelling out "Jack Sparrow," his character's name in the wildly popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" films.
"When we made the first one three years ago, I was touched that the character was embraced to such a degree by people of varying ages. I've seen 5-year-old kids trying to imitate Captain Jack and that's really something," said Depp, 43, of the character that earned him his first Oscar nomination. Joining Depp to promote the second film in the trilogy, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," were Orlando Bloom, 29, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. "It was physically far more demanding," said Bloom, popularly known in Japan as "Ori." "One three-way swordfight took three weeks to shoot. But to be part of a film series that people have responded to like this is phenomenal." -- Full report
Interview with Orlando
posted by Jas, 07/10/06
Dan from The Cinema Source wrote in to say that they have an exclusive interview with Orlando as well as with other POTC 2 cast members.
"The real special stuff, honestly, was working with Stellan. It's a father-son dynamic that is a real core for Will. That's his inner battle. The girl or my dad? What do I do? What do I do? As a young man you have to have a relationship with your Father and he needs that." Bloom not only appreciated the thematic importance of the scenes, he also loved the opportunity to work with Skarsgård. "I just loved hanging out with Stellan. He's a family man. He's a great actor, he's a great guy. He was a great example to me and a wonderful guy to hang out with."
Filming on the third Pirates feature is still under way. Bloom has an even-keeled outlook on the prospect of his second trilogy coming to an end. "You never really say goodbye. It's weird. By the time you've done all the press and the movies are released and they're out in the world and people come to talk to you about them, you never really say goodbye. It's like Rings. I was really sad to say goodbye to that. But you know what, Legolas is still a part of my life, in one form or another. I still think about him, he's still kind of out there. He's still out in the world, and so is Will. So, you never really say goodbye. But I will be very sad not to be rocking up to set or flying down to the Caribbean and hanging out." In a time when celebrity is fleeting and summer blockbusters are a dime a dozen, it's reassuring to see that a star like Bloom is so attached to his work and invested in the characters that he helps create. -- Full interview

MTV has a story on Pirates 3
The opening weekend of one of the most anticipated films in years has come and gone, and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" took home a predictably impressive booty. Now, with a third film due May 2007, the time has come to try to get the pirate performers to cough up their secrets.
"I am so not going to say anything!" an indignant Keira Knightley shrieked recently when pressed for details on "At World's End," the newly titled third and final "Pirates" flick. "I'd have to kill you if I said anything. It would be very messy."
So, like a child running from mommy's "no" to daddy's "yes," sometimes the best thing a fan can do is keep trying until a desired answer is given. And although Knightley is threatening bodily harm, series director Gore Verbinski is happy to discuss the Herculean task that would have most directors running for the hills like Jack Sparrow when faced with headhunters.
"I hope that you feel like there was an era and that era came to an end and there was a reason why," said Verbinski of the trilogy. "It's nice to make a pirate movie, expand that movie and then almost do the postmodern version of that pirate movie in a trilogy. That's what I like about 'At World's End,' because not only do we have to go to the end of the world, but there's also a double meaning because of what happened there. You'll see."
"We're going back soon," Orlando Bloom said of the final leg in the "Pirates" journey, which begins shooting next month. "We're going back to film three more months."
This much we know: "End" will begin where "Chest" concludes, building off the surprise ending that brought back a pivotal character from "The Curse of the Black Pearl." Chow Yun-Fat ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") will join the cast as the mysterious Captain Sao Feng. The film opens and is largely set in Singapore, utilizing a massive set that inhabited Universal's Hollywood lot for months. Oh, and if you think you've seen the last of Captain Jack Sparrow, you're as clueless as a pirate wearing two eye patches.
"Are they gonna stay on?" Johnny Depp said of Sparrow's trademark gold teeth, currently adorning his mouth. "Only until we're done filming number three. Then I'll have to go through the process of yanking them."
With the seemingly imperiled Sparrow returning, fans can look forward to the aftermath of his love-triangle-creating kiss with Knightley, as well as further developments in his relationship with gypsy hostess with the mostess Tia Dalma.
"It's supposed to be that we're lovers," revealed actress Naomie Harris, who plays the mysterious soothsayer. "We talked about it in rehearsals, but Gore left it up to us, really, to come up with our own stories ourselves."
In the third film, Tia Dalma's role is expanded substantially, and she even gets to see some action. "I go on a ship with all the guys and go on their journey, which is really nice," Harris revealed. "No fighting, although I do throw a bomb. That's as physical as I get."
Verbinski, who calls Yun-Fat "fantastic, such a pleasure to work with," says that his character and the Singapore location — which includes a scene in a bathhouse — will bring a welcome change to the pirate tale.
"Fortunately, just when [staleness] starts happening in the third movie, we get to have an Asian influence," he said. "The pirates get a whole changeover, and that's really nice because you get kind of sick of the same old [thing]: beard, slap on the hat, put on the bandanna, put in the rotten teeth, argggh!"
"At World's End" will also resolve the tender story line between Will and his damned daddy, Stellan Skarsgard's "Bootstrap" Bill Turner. Revealing that "you'll see me even worse off in the next one," Skarsgard said this about the cost-cutting strategy of shooting two sequels simultaneously: "Basically it's like making one five-hour movie and then chopping it up in two."
"It's inevitably triage every day on the set," Verbinski laughed while discussing the process that will take more than four years of his life. "You have release dates coming at you, and you've got two massive puzzles that have been dumped out on a table. The pieces are all mixed up, and we're in Dominica and we're filming scenes for 'Pirates 2,' and while we're here, because we have to clean out and we're not going to come back, we have to get a scene from 'Pirates 3' that hasn't been written yet.
"We've had a skeleton of both movies, so even though certain scenes weren't written, we knew what they were about," the director continued. "Pages would come in on Wednesday, the actor would get them on Friday and then we would shoot them on Monday."
After the final round of shoots (scheduled to take place from August to the end of October), Verbinski plans to give audiences a film that is both thrilling and cohesive when it hits theaters come May. "You can't give them the same thing again," he said of his promise to the audience. "You have to surprise them, and you have to take it up a notch and give them twists and turns. Inevitably, part of those twists and turns is taking them places that they don't expect, and it creates anticipation of the third film, with many people feeling like the three films were designed as one epic tale.
"Well, they weren't," the director added. "But I want to be able to look at all three films on DVD someday and be like, 'That was a cohesive trilogy.' "
"You'll have to wait and see," the tough-to-crack Knightley said. "It should be good, though."
Interview with Naomie Harris

Film Focus has an interview with Naomie Harris
FF: Was it good fun to work with Johnny, Keira and Orlando?
NH: They're wonderful. Orlando's a really wonderful guy, actually, he's so sweet and he's a Fire Dragon like me. Fire is our natural element and Dragon our astrological sign. We're both Buddhist. I really liked him and I really got in with him. He's very spiritual and lovely.
And I caught a cold on my first day of filming. I did all this work on my role and we only had one day of rehearsal with Johnny. I had to do all this prep before my first day of shooting and I was so excited and I caught a cold on the plane going over to Los Angeles. I arrived for my first day of shooting and it was awful. I only had four days of filming on Pirates 2 for those two scenes and they had the on-set doctor come and she said, "Well, you know, to get through the four days what I'd recommend is that you have a steroid injection. It will stay in your body for seven years but it'll get you through these four days." *laughs* I was like, "Umm, no... I'll just plough through!"
So I was told that I was not allowed to speak in between takes so I was sort-of miming what I wanted in-between takes. And Orlando was so sweet because he stepped in. He was my interpreter; he'd say, "Naomie wants a tissue! Naomie wants water now! I think she's saying..." And he gave me loads of homeopathic remedies as well. So I love Orlando. I got through those four days and the voice actually helped the character, which was good. -- Full interview

An interview with Orlando from People and Jam Movies
From People
Are you looking forward to turning 30 in January?
It's going to be great. I'm not a big partier. I like to dance and whatever, but I'm not one of those guys who throws lavish parties for the sake of it. It's not my thing. But I will probably get a few friends together in a way that's hopefully private and fun.
How do you deal with the tabloids going after your personal life?
Some days it's harder than others. Some days you can go out and no one even notices you and then other days you've got 10 cars trailing you with a camera and you go, "Where did you come from?"
Does your mother ever call you up worried about something she's read?
Oh, God, yes. I'm like, "Mom, who do you believe? Someone who talks rubbish or your son who you've known since he was born and who you brought into the world?" She believes the rubbish. -- full interview
From Showbiz
Orlando Bloom would love to get married and start a family. Just not now. "I can't wait!" the 29-year-old Bloom says excitedly during interviews for his latest release, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which opens today. "But I'm still young!" So he can wait after all, he says. "There is a lot of living to do. What's the hurry?"
"It's difficult," Bloom says of having their relationship chronicled in gossip columns, in good times and bad times, often incorrectly. "It is hard to be under the public eye all the time," he says. "It is hard to have to clear up the mess of someone talking shite about you, you know what I mean? It puts a strain on, I won't deny it."
Celebrities often choose secrecy and exile to escape media attention, according to Bloom: "I can understand why Johnny, why people, remove themselves," he says, referring to Depp and Paradis' decision to live part of the year in Paris and Antibes, France. "It is a very sad fact that people are driven to do that at some point or another. I get it." -- full interview

Orlando Bloom Embraces His Inner Pirate
posted by Jas, 07/06/06
Newsday has an interview with Orlando
AP: How much did your life change after the first "Pirates" film?
Bloom: The first one really opened the floodgates in terms of my career. It was a real door into the American marketplace, which is kind of awesome.
AP: What makes these "Pirates" films so appealing?
Bloom: I guess we all want to be a pirate. Somewhere inside us I suppose it's a real fantasy about being out on the open sea. Nothing's stopping you from living whatever life you want to live. You're not landlocked. And pirate booty, everyone likes a bit of pirate booty -- the idea that you can dig up a pot of gold or find a treasure. That has a little dreamlike quality to it. I think what's cool about this movie is there's the mythology side to it, like the myth of the ocean and Davy Jones. We've all heard of Davy Jones and Davy Jones' locker but we don't really know what it's about. That gives (the film) a certain credibility, a method to the madness.
AP: What was it like working with Johnny Depp?
Bloom: He just tears up the screen. It was great for me. Johnny was always a bit of a hero for me growing up. I think he's had a fantastic career making brave choices and doing movies that he wants, not conforming. I really admire that and I think he really delivers as Jack Sparrow. It was great for me to watch him go through his process.
AP: What's next for you?
Bloom: "Haven." I'm really excited. It comes out Sept. 15. It's a great story, an island story. It's a real human drama.
AP: Did you always want to be an actor?
Bloom: I really did. I always knew that's what I wanted to do. I feel like I lucked out. It's kind of a dream to do this sort of stuff, and when it happens, you just hold on for dear life. It's like a roller coaster but it's fantastic. I wouldn't change it for the world. -- full interview
