Shooting for AWE has wrapped up
posted by Jas, 12/23/06
According to Bill Nighy in an interview with Latino Review, shooting for At World's End has wrapped up.

LR: Now you are in the third installment of Pirates?
Nighy: I am. I am at liberty to tell you that. I am the squid, the squid is back. He's in very bad shape, this time he's angry. So I am there in a big way and nutty, mad stuff happens to Johnny and Orlando and Kiera and myself and it's wild. If you thought the last one was nuts, the new one is even freakier.

LR: Did you have to go back to film recently?
Nighy: Yeah. We actually shot quite a lot, they've only just wrapped. The official wrap party was last Friday.

LR: Now that you've seen the effects, did you have any input or requests for your tentacles this time around?
Nighy: No, I left it in the hands of the guys who did it in the first place. They were so brilliant. I had no idea that it was even technologically available. I didn't know that it was possible to inform a creature with a performance to that degree. They always told me they were going to do it, they're very nice guys, they did it beautifully. I was very moved when I first saw it. All the silly stuff we did on set survived and was translated technologically on the screen.

LR: So might we be seeing a softer side of your character this time around?
Nighy: (Pauses, smiling) It's possible. Yeah.

Terry Rossio has also posted a message on the WordPlayer forum about the wrap up

'Pirates' DVD sells 5 million
posted by Jas, 12/07/06
Variety reports that Dead Man's Chest is on track to become the highest-selling live-action disc of all time.

Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" -- expected to be the biggest seller in an already busy holiday season -- tallied nearly 5 million sales in its Tuesday bow, tying the March debut of Warners' "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." "Dead Man's Chest," which has earned more than $1 billion in worldwide B.O. this year, is poised to outplunder the original "Pirates" on disc. The first "Pirates" sold 11 million units during its first week on shelves in December 2003 -- a record for a live-action film -- and has sold 18 million copies overall, with 16 million of those on DVD.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Ends with a Bang

POTC writer Terry Rossio told Scifi Wire that Pirates 3 will have an epic grand finale. See a new picture from P3. Thanks to Pre-K for the tip

"The most difficult thing about writing a trilogy is coming up with the climactic ending of the trilogy," Rossio told SciFiWire. "So for that third film, you have not only the usual challenges of coming up with an ending, but somehow you have to have the ending of all endings."

Geoffrey Rush reveals "Pirates" secrets
posted by Jas, 12/05/06
In a phone interview from LA, Geoffrey Rush said he has completed filming Pirates 3

Rush spoke on the phone from a Los Angeles hotel room about "Candy," which was shot last year, but perhaps the open seas resonated with him a bit more because he had just completed the filming of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." The movie, which wraps up the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), also stars Chow Yun-Fat and features an appearance by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards as Sparrow's pop. "Pirates" opens next summer.

The latest entry establishes the seafaring epic as global, with the brotherhood of pirates battling a brutal trading company, Rush says. "Over the last two weeks, just completing the filming, you have little bits of the jigsaw (puzzle) left," Rush says. "You think what surprises can I bring to the character? The sort of stuff that I think emerges in ("Pirates") three is not just more of the same. Everything comes to an absolute climax. Many climaxes!"

DMC Golden Globe chances
posted by Jas, 12/03/06
Variety takes a look at the chances of Dead Man's Chest being nominated for the Golden Globe Awards

Release date: July 7
Worldwide B.O.: $1.06 billion
Why it will be nominated: It's no stretch to imagine Globes will be in the same boat as the millions who made the pic the year's top grosser. As one of the rare mega-franchises to compete in this category, it has an advantage with profile and excitement that few competitors can match.
Why it won't: Despite its financial success, the charm and nimbleness of the original may have dimmed too much between installments. With the original pic failing to earn a nom, it's unlikely the sequel will fare better.
What Variety said: "Inevitably, the effect of (Depp's) wild makeup and costume, mincing manner and carefully calculated unpredictability proves less arresting the second time around. The surprise is gone, but so is the nearly faultless comic timing, not to mention any good lines."
Upcoming screenings: Dec. 1 (WGA), Dec. 3 (Disney), Dec. 10 (Pacific Design Center), Dec. 19 (Disney)

Pirates will get crushed
posted by Jas, 12/01/06
Terry Rossio posted a response on the Wordplay forum to what's gonna happen to Pirates 3 in the summer where Spiderman 3 and Shrek 3 will be released around the same time.

... because Spiderman comes out first, and gets two weeks to itself, so it will be fine. Shrek is overtly a family film, so it will do okay. Pirates is third, so the opening weekend is going to suffer (since Shrek and Spiderman are in exactly the same demographic). Pirates 3 will open to roughly half the box office of P2 ... ... and the critics will blame the screenplay. Too long, too noisy, too convoluted, it doesn't make any sense at all, but Gore and Jonny do the best they can with it.

-----------

>> My prediction: AWE will earn more than DMC over its lifetime, but it will take time.

Mmm, I really don't think so. There's a business side to the movie biz, and there are some consistent factors to box office. DMC made 132 million in one weekend. That's crazy. That's a mob frenzy. It was a case of the stars aligning, Depp's mystique, appreciation for the first movie, a great title, excellent trailer, no competition ... tulip mania hitting its height.

With Spidy and Shrek as options, if AWE still opens to a VERY VERY GOOD 70 million dollar weekend, that will still be 50% less than the record (and I'm not kidding, the critics will of course blame the screenplay). If you start at 70 instead of 130, there is no way -- with Harry Potter waiting -- you can get to 425. Last summer, worldwide, everyone backed away from Pirates. We don't have that next summer.

And -- DMC had so many new things to offer -- you had to go see the Kraken, you had to go see Davy Jones, you had to see the rolling bone cages and the fight on the wheel, etc., Jack running from cannibals, Jack with the Black Spot, etc. It's not known yet if AWE has that kind of must-see appeal. Best thing about AWE, in my opinion, is Geoffrey Rush is back. And a kick-ass ending. Now I think Pirates will do well, of course. $600 million worldwide at least. Nothing wrong with that, except that the bar has been raised so high.
