'Kingdom' rules the world
posted by Jas, 05/06/05
Press release from Business Wire about the box office performance of Kingdom of Heaven around the globe.

kingdom's reign has begun! Ridley Scott's sweeping epic kingdom OF Heaven has already proven to be box office royalty as it commences its day-and-date release around the globe. The Orlando Bloom-starrer began its charge through nearly 100 planned markets with remarkable strength and has been coronated #1 in most markets.

Europe
kingdom was Heaven-sent in Germany, where the film debuted at $2.1 million (estimated, includes Wednesday previews), marking the best opening of the year so far in that territory. Germany's Thursday opening was just above "Troy" and 95% more than "Gladiator's" debut. In Belgium, kingdom was supreme; Thursday's box office of $281K was 174% of "Troy's" Thursday opening. The Dutch also embraced kingdom; their Thursday opening of $274K ranked as the best opening of the year, and was 120% of "Troy's" gross in the equivalent timeframe. Switzerland's openings in the French and German sectors have grossed $463K before the weekend begins, with Thursday's figures outperforming "Troy's" bow by 197%. Russia reaped a royal $404K on opening Thursday, to become the fourth best Fox opening day after only "The Day After Tomorrow," "Die Another Day," and "I, Robot," and just shy of the opening of the highest grossing film in Russia -- "Turkish Gambit."

Asia/Pacific
Moviegoers in the Asia/Pacific region also welcomed the arrival of kingdom: Korea's #1 opening collected an outstanding $1.2 million through Thursday. Singapore's excellent opening day gross of $113K was 100% of "Troy's" bow and 206% of "Gladiator's" opening. In Malaysia, kingdom OF Heaven earned a glowing $52K, representing 100% of "Troy's" debut and 203% of that of "Gladiator." Thailand's outstanding opening day of $204K outperformed the openings for both "Troy" and "Gladiator."

Latin America
Heaven shined in Latin America as well: Mexico's Thursday Opening of $530K was 40% higher than "Gladiator," which opened on a Friday. Puerto Rico's excellent opening at $49K was 108% of "Troy" and 270% of "Gladiator."

kingdom OF Heaven will continue its triumphant crusade throughout the world this weekend, and will bow next week in Japan.

'Kingdom' comes to tepid summer box office
posted by Jas, 05/06/05
Reuters prediction for Kingdom of Heaven performance at the box office this weekend.

20th Century Fox will bow Scott's "kingdom of Heaven" in 3,216 theaters this weekend. The historical drama of the Crusades -- the fight for Jerusalem between Christians and Muslims -- has sparked some outrage from religious groups. And while some Christian leaders have asked for the film to be boycotted, the enhanced awareness brought by the threats might only help increase the box office draw.

With Orlando Bloom in his first lead role, Fox has taken a gamble on a less-established star to help carry its expensive film. Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson and Eva Green co-star, and industry insiders expect the film's opening weekend to generate in the mid-$20 millions, replacing reigning champ "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

The opening will pale in comparison to Scott's previous historical epic, "Gladiator," which bowed to $34.8 million in 2000 before grossing $187.7 million. Bloom's preteen fan base from his hunky roles in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and the "Lord of the Rings" franchise might be out of the loop because of "kingdom's" R rating. If Bloom can cross over, the film could gain some upside. The other film to which "kingdom" is being compared is Warners' R-rated "Troy," which opened to $46.7 million last year but had the star power of Brad Pitt behind it as well as Bloom in a supporting role.
