Summer flicks: To watch or not to watch? On May 6, Orlando Bloom returns to the costume chair in Ridley Scott's epic 12th century motion picture, "Kingdom of Heaven." In this movie, Bloom will play a young warrior who discovers that he is the heir to the throne of France. Since this is Bloom's 423rd historical epic, he will try to refresh his role by shedding his supporting actor's skin and taking the lead, which means that his immeasurable range of sad puppy dog expressions will be in full effect with no leading star to filter out its tremendous power of somberness. Even the gallant throws of epic warfare cannot dissuade Bloom's ever growing power of sedation. Paying to see this film is the same as paying for a hard night's sleep. Pleasant dreams. -- Eric Jones Another preview from Star Telegram What's at stake: Scott has long met with extraordinary financial success, but he's never quite overcome a widespread perception among critics that his movies are fast, slick and empty. That elusive Best Director Oscar would certainly ensure his place in the film-history textbooks. Our prediction: Better luck next time. With its epic scale and its tortured hero searching for redemption, Kingdom -- which screened for critics last month -- comes off as a retread of Gladiator, only much more lumbering and unfocused.
KOH reviews Kingdom of Heaven does prove that Orlando Bloom can carry a film. Rumour has it that ER's Goran Visnjic was Scott's first choice for the role. Bloom has appeared decidedly lightweight in the cringeworthy comedy The Calcium Kid and was one of the weakest links in last year's Troy. He may not be the most expressive of actors, but in Kingdom of Heaven he brings an authority to his dramatic scenes and looks very adept with a sword when it comes to the battles. Full review
